GW's paint vs Testers Paint

well as the title says GW's paint vs Testers Paint? Which is better for a model that has been primed with chaos black? as much as i am enjoying the GW paint it is really expensive, so what differences does it make in comparison to one another?

GW's paint vs Testers Paint

As long as you are talking acrylics, the Testors Models Master paints are great. They don't have quite the range of palette that GW paints do, mainly because they are either automotive or military, bit they are wonderful paints nonetheless. And if you are doing camo IG, even better!

GW's paint vs Testers Paint

Regular Testers model paint is a whole different animal than GW paints. Testers are an enamel that are mediocre for model cars and horrible for little army men.

If you're looking for an alternative, try out Vallejo Game color or Vallejo model color. The game color line offers colors similar to GW colors with similar but different enough names to avoid copy right law suits while the model color line offers a wider range of colors.

Both come in 17 ml dropper bottles so you'll need a pallet to work with them, but they give you more bang for your buck and won't dry out as quickly (subject to internets argument so I'm just using personal experience).

P3 also has a line of paints that are pretty good too. Unfortunately I can't remember prices or quantities off the top of my head so you can google that.

Check out the selection and prices at your local gamestore and see if they have any specials or recommendations.

If you're looking to go real cheap then you can always pick up Apple Barrel or Folk Art craft paints at Walmart. For less than a buck you get a nice big bottle so you can afford to get all the colors you want. HUGE drawbacks to using them for models as the pigment density is low and the paint is thick, so forget about GW quality.

TLR Try everything your local gamestore has and go from there.

Re:GW's paint vs Testers Paint

I'm assuming that you are talking about the line of acrylics that Testors makes. The Testors paints are thin enough to use in an airbrush almost out of the bottle and since they are so thin they are close to self leveling, meaning minimal to no brush marks if you apply them with a brush. The down side is that they are thin and need two or more coats if you are trying to paint over black. Try using a gray primer instead you'll get a better result color wise. Back to the paints, Testors also make the Floquil line of acrylics and these are the ones I use most. They cover better, are a little thicker than the Testors line and some of the railroad colors are either close to or dead matches for some GW paints. If you have not seen these paints here's a couple of links for them, the military line is split up into era or nation.

Military paints...

http://www.testors.com/category/137613/Model_%26amp%3B_Hobby_Camoflage

Railroad...

http://www.testors.com/category/137367/Railroad_Acrylics

As a plus in the railroad line there are colors that could be used for terrain and such, like the Aged Concrete color, I used that on some Jersey barriers I built a while back. The amount of colors that you can get in lager containers for almost the same price as GW means that GW does not get a lot of my paint money.
