Article

In an attempt to address the lingering "Han shot first" controversy, Star Wars creator George Lucas may have only fanned the flames of fandom even more. You see, Lucas says Han Solo never actually fired first in his classic showdown with Greedo. Fans only wanted to think that. So basically it's all your own fault.

In a chat with The Hollywood Reporter (via /Film), Lucas said, "The controversy over who shot first, Greedo or Han Solo, in Episode IV, what I did was try to clean up the confusion, but obviously it upset people because they wanted Solo [who seemed to be the one who shot first in the original] to be a cold-blooded killer, but he actually isn't.
Funny thing is, Lucas kind of has a point. Han shooting first in the original edit is the only point where the person who starts the violence benefits from it, so on a thematic level the change makes sense. It's just the final edit requires us to believe that Greedo missed Han from across a table, and that someone so staggeringly incompetent could have gotten the drop on Han in the first place... which basically just makes everyone look bad.

Lucas, of course, continues to not understand this, because he's rich and successful and owns one of the profitable setting in the world, and so really doesn't need to bother about suffering the ego hit that'd come from admitting he screwed up.

LordofHats wrote:And this is the many who's spent the last 15 years ruining the EU for the rest of us...

The EU was pretty ridiculous even when Lucas wasn't involved.

I swear, you Star Wars fans have the worst case of battered wife syndrome ever. Lucas's self-interest was on display as far back as 1983, when he chose teddy bears over Sasquatches for merchandizing reasons. And it's been like that for over 30 years now.

And clearly he has some weird obsession with reworking his older films, but I think a bigger factor is how the cash register rings every time he releases a new "edition." Of course he thinks the SW fans are stupid. I'd be tempted to feel that way too if people just kept blindly buying the money-grubbing schlock I was pumping out. If you really think about his career, it's not hard to see how his attitudes have formed.

Lucas is and was a *great* businessman first and foremost. Everything else is secondary.

Ok, lets clear this up there was never a case where 'Han shot first'.

Han shot, Greedo didn't fire at all.

Besides how could be fire first and miss a sitting target at that range with a gun pointed at him. Pointless witless retcon two brighten up Han Solos rep in Lucas' eyes.

Besides there is no need to worry about Han Solo being a common murderer, when there is more than enough evidence to call him a terrorist. He wasn't formally part of the rebel armed forces when he attacked Imperial military assets resulting in the deaths of Imperial citizens. Sort of defeats the point saying he was defending himself against Greedo (which he was anyway as Greedo pulled a gun on him first) when as an illegal combatant he was blowing away soldiers on the Death Star: aka terrorism.

I quite enjoyed the Phantom Menace, it's a bit disjointed being set so far before the other films. Surely they could have just skipped it and started the first film with Anakin already and adult?

I find it inoffensive. Jar Jar Binks is bloody annoying but it's just lightweight stuff, there are specific things I don't like about episodes 2 and 3 though. None are a patch on the originals though, and I look forward to them in 3D, the bit with the Death Star Trench had better be good!

I'll be going to see this in 3D, not sure about the other films.

d-usa wrote:If he walked through the bar, and Greedo walks up to him and before he could even say one word Han guns him down....THEN he would have been a cold blooded killer.

Here are two outlaws meeting in a bar, one getting the drop on the other, in a situation that is basically a future version of the classic Wild West standoff.

And in any Wild West standoff you want to shoot first, not hope that the other guy misses.

The point is that having a scene out of the Wild West doesn't fit with the pulp sensibilities of the rest of the trilogy. But there's a million and one pulp ways to finish that scene, grabbing the gun, punching Greedo, flinging the table up, and whatever else. None of which are anywhere near as cool as what happened originally, but more along the lines of what Lucas would probably have done if he could go back and reshoot the scene, instead of just putting some crappy effects over the original footage.

Now, you, I, and everyone other Star Wars fan will likely say 'don't care if it doesn't quite fit with everything else, Han blowing Greedo away was cool as hell, and so who cares if it doesn't fit with the rest of the theme'. And that's fine, and a good argument, but there's no point in just not understanding what Lucas is saying.

Automatically Appended Next Post:

Orlanth wrote:Besides there is no need to worry about Han Solo being a common murderer, when there is more than enough evidence to call him a terrorist.

You're applying modern morality, and that approach doesn't apply, and makes no sense. This is a pulp action series, and the rule is you don't cold bloodedly murder someone. Even when it makes no sense and only causes a million and one bigger problems down the road.

And when you point out they were shooting loads of guys on the Death Star, well go back and watch it again, and look who shoots first every single time... it isn't the heroes.

Automatically Appended Next Post:

KingCracker wrote:Yea I dont get it personally, in Ep 1-3 they are incredible shots, like a highly trained military force should be. THEN in ep4-6 they are what I was referring too......what happened?

They only missed when shooting at heroes and ewoks. Other than that they defeated the guards in the opening scenes of Star Wars, beat the hell out of the Jawas and Luke's family, overran Hoth very quickly, and beat the rebel attack on Endor.

Missing the heroes all the time makes sense, because they're the heroes and if they don't have plot immunity then you don't have much of a movie series. Might as well ask why none of those highly trained CIA operatives ever managed to hit Jason Bourne.

The ewoks... is well, the ewoks. Ignore that whole ewok thing and Return of the Jedi is a pretty good movie.

The point is that the quick on the draw trope isn't just a trope, but a key theme of Westerns, that you don't just have to be noble, but tough enough to make it count (which in turn leads to all kinds of issues about the 'man with a gun'). That flies in direct contrast to the theme and rules of pulp action that Star Wars was directly built around, where the man who initiates violence is always weaker, and always defeated. How many times did Buck Rogers shoot a guy with a gun concealed under the table?

You might want to argue that Star Wars is more than that, more than just a faithful homage to old movie serials, and I'd agree, and I think maybe George Lucas circa 1979 would agree as well. George Lucas circa 2012 disagrees, unfortunately. But just because he's wrong doesn't mean we need to fail to understand his argument.

It was a standalone trilogy, until it was part of nine films, until it was just six films.

That Lucas seems to change his mind and either not realise it, or not acknowledge strikes me as a major part of the problem.

There's a whole line of argument to be made that Han Solo shooting first was rebellion against the established "He who shoots first is the bad buy" trope, in order to shake up the movie-going public's perception of what a hero is.

Yeah, Han shooting first is a cooler resolution to the scene, it makes Han more interesting as a character, and it makes his eventual return to save Luke that much more awesome. Those things should matter more than fitting with the rules of pulp sci-fi, and it appears they did matter more to Lucas circa 1979 (who'd just been given a two week one on one lesson in storytelling from Franics Ford Coppollat), but unfortunately that isn't the case for Lucas circa 2012.

I think the point I realised Lucas didn't get it anymore was when I was watching the director's commentary for Attack of the Clones. In it he mentions that he created the Geonosians as an ugly, insect like race, because people had mentioned that when the rebels blew up the second death star it was full of private contractors - the Geonosians. This way the rebellion never killed innocent people and isn't that nice. Except Lucas missed that the death of innocents on board the second Death Star wasn't a problem, it was a thing that fans got to talk about, if they wanted to, to add a level of grit that made the thing more interesting to them.

Monster Rain wrote:I specifically remember interviews where he dismissed people attributing too much depth to the Star Wars films, specifically mentioning that it's "good guys vs. bad guys" in space and using the phrase "white hats."

Sounds reasonable. I recall something about TIE-Fighter pilots and Stormtroopers wearing helmets because it made them look more evil than the rebel pilots and soldiers whose faces you could see. Apparently it was some trick Lucas learned from WW2 movies where the German pilots' faces were usually obscured by their oxygen masks and goggles.

Still, I've always regarded Han shooting first as a character trait setting him apart from the "true-white" characters. He's been through a lot. He's a criminal, a scoundrel. Scoundrels don't have issues with shooting first. He does have a soft spot as is shown later, but this one only gets "awakened" after meeting Leia - even though he tries to attribute his comeback to the reward. But it's clear that there is some character progression going on there. Han shooting second simply takes away a bit of that progression.

The Expanded Universe later ... uh ... expanded on the Empire vs Rebellion conflict by inserting more grey zones, especially regarding bad rebels (including actual terrorists) or good Imperials (Lieutenant Sunber, for example). It doesn't contradict anything shown on-screen, but of course it's a whole different tone when put into perspective.

Samus_aran115 wrote:Oh god I loled. How much do storm trooper costumes run?

As far as I know, about 1-2k, depending on the quality you're aiming for.

But if you thought that was cool, wait until you see IMPS:

Bleak_Fantasy wrote:So Kevin Smith and Clerks is why Attack of The Clones sucked?

Lucas's response to that scene in Clerks shows how Lucas doesn't understand his own creation, or what fans love about it. If someone has made a hit movie with a famous scene talking about insane fan created detail in your own movie, don't work to undermine the point made in that scene, embrace it instead.

Automatically Appended Next Post:

gorgon wrote:Yeah, I'm sure he has an explanation for the flirting/tension between Luke and Leia and how it's not the least bit incestuous and was all part of his master plan.

Personally I think the guy is prone to changing his mind a lot, but his ego doesn't allow him to acknowledge it. I think he wants to see himself as a master visionary, and admitting he made stuff up as he went along somehow damages that self-image.

Pretty much. Thing is, if you read the early stories that Lucas wrote over and over again, refining it each time, you can see the process of development, from horribly clunky cheesefest The Adventures of Luke Starkiller to the much more refined Star Wars.

I don't know why Lucas wants to pretend that process never took place, and that the films existed ready made in his mind, just waiting to be recorded onto the screen. I suspect his ego doesn't want to admit how much his ideas were refined and improved by other creative minds, from Coppola to Irving Kirshner.

Automatically Appended Next Post:

LordofHats wrote:Arguably the flirting/tension is less evidence of incetuous feelings and more an acknowledgment of an underlying connection. Of course in the final product it feels kind of tacked on and sudden.

That plotline came and went from early drafts of the story. It was pretty clearly absent from the final shooting run of Star Wars - seriously, any director not trying to make incest a theme in his story just wouldn't have those two acting like they did, if he thought he was going to reveal that relationship later in the movies.

I think originally the relationship was going to be completely removed, because practically it doesn't serve any purpose in the storyline.

sebster wrote:Automatically Appended Next Post:

gorgon wrote:Yeah, I'm sure he has an explanation for the flirting/tension between Luke and Leia and how it's not the least bit incestuous and was all part of his master plan.

Although I wonder if he'd talk at length about it if you just asked him on the right day.

Figure that when he's feeling particularly egomanical, he talks about Joseph Campbell and how Star Wars taps deeply into classic myth and various archetypes. When he's feeling defensive, he reverses course and wants us to think that SW is just silly kid's stuff that the fans take too seriously. When he's feeling obsessive...well, he's now superserious about it again and back in the lab changing something else about the series. George's reality shifts quite a bit from day to day...as witnessed by "Greedo always shot first."

That plotline came and went from early drafts of the story. It was pretty clearly absent from the final shooting run of Star Wars - seriously, any director not trying to make incest a theme in his story just wouldn't have those two acting like they did, if he thought he was going to reveal that relationship later in the movies.

And while not canon, the storylines in the comics and novels like Splinter of the Mind's Eye almost certainly had to get authorized by George. If he knew about the sibling relationship all along, wouldn't he have put the kibosh on the romantic stuff given how creepy it would later become?

sebster wrote:Pretty much. His only mistake is doing so after the movies were already released, which will of course anger the people who prefer continuity in their stories.
As far as I'm aware, he never denied that it took place, either, quite the contrary. How would people even know of the early versions of the story if he did not tell them?

gorgon wrote:And while not canon, the storylines in the comics and novels like Splinter of the Mind's Eye almost certainly had to get authorized by George.

Welllll... EU stories actually are canon, for unlike 40k, Star Wars does have an according policy (explained here) - it's just that Lucas still reserves the right to simply overrule it when doing his stuff, and by his own admittance he doesn't know a lot about what is going on in the Expanded Universe. So I suppose it depends on whether you want to look at the movies alone or Star Wars in its entirety.

"Splinter in the Minds Eye" actually did involve a lot of guidance from Lucas, and - which may come as a surprise for the people who think they are a Prequel invention - midichlorians were being talked about even back then.
http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Midi-chlorian#Origins

We can only assume that the issue of personal relationship between the characters was discussed during these meetings as well.

Lucas continues to hate you all

gorgon wrote:Although I wonder if he'd talk at length about it if you just asked him on the right day.

Fair point. I've never seen him spend time acknowledging other people's contributions to Star Wars though, and as I understand some of other people are kind of bitter about it.

And while not canon, the storylines in the comics and novels like Splinter of the Mind's Eye almost certainly had to get authorized by George. If he knew about the sibling relationship all along, wouldn't he have put the kibosh on the romantic stuff given how creepy it would later become?

I think it's a thing that he wanted as part of the story some times, while at other times it wasn't. That's kind of how art works, ideas make sense as part of the story in one iteration, and in others they don't.

Automatically Appended Next Post:

Lynata wrote:Actually, doesn't the whole development process only "validate" Lucas' attempts at continueing the same trend, at least in his eyes? His only mistake is doing so after the movies were already released, which will of course anger the people who prefer continuity in their stories.
As far as I'm aware, he never denied that it took place, either, quite the contrary. How would people even know of the early versions of the story if he did not tell them?

The thing is that Lucas seems to believe there is one perfect, unchanging story of Star Wars in his head, and everything else has just been him trying to get that onto the screen.

gorgon wrote:And while not canon, the storylines in the comics and novels like Splinter of the Mind's Eye almost certainly had to get authorized by George.

In some early drafts the Force was even more convoluted mess of silliness. I've posted an early version of the speech Obi Wan gives before on this site, where he goes into all kinds of nonsense about the history of the Jedi and Sith families, and how the light side and the dark side had different names, and compared it to the final version given by Alec Guiness, which is such genius in it's simplicity.

Automatically Appended Next Post:

Grakmar wrote:A New Hope was directed by Lucas (although reports at the time is that the studio and actors were able to push him around quite a bit to change things)

Lucas remained very distant from his actors during Star Wars though, most of the coaching of the actors was left to his assistant director, while Lucas focussed on various elements of production. It's why he naturally took a step back for ESB, and stayed away from the camera, working on ideas, scripts and technical aspects right up until TPM, when for some reason he forgot he'd never been one to coach actors.

Automatically Appended Next Post:

gorgon wrote:How much more entertaining would ROTJ have been if directed by David Lynch like Lucas originally wanted?

It would have been Dune. So, not very cool at all

The only strong contradictions I noticed were that they made Ryloth a normal off-the-rack desert planet instead of the storm-ravaged hellhole that has people huddle up in equatorial caverns, as well as turning the Zygerrians from space elves into furries.

Aside from that ... well, most of the rage is aimed at how the series is portraying the Mandalorians, but the funny thing is that it was Traviss who fethed up first, as the peaceful government era was already mentioned before the first Republic Commando novel was released.

I for one like that the Clone Wars series actually does a better job at connecting to the EU than Lucas' prequels themselves. Like having Y-Wings, Z-95s, and a ton of other stuff you'd expect in this era but that never shows up in the movies.

Aside from that ... well, most of the rage is aimed at how the series is portraying the Mandalorians, but the funny thing is that it was Traviss who fethed up first, as the peaceful government era was already mentioned before the first Republic Commando novel was released.

It doesn't shock me that she wrote books with absolutely no consideration for what the rest of the EU was doing. Its kind of her MO. A lot of the older SWEU fans left when Sacrifice was released, so there are fewer people around now he remember just how much she messed things up. Her first couple of years as a writer was nothing but screwing other authors.

But there is a lot being messed up by the series. The Battle of Mon Calamari for example is very different in the series than in the original EU material. Asaj Ventress' storyline has likewise been messed up quite a bit in terms of chronology.

However I do really like some of the series episodes. The 4-parter in Season 4 that mostly centered around Rex and the Clones was a very good bit of Television for me, and my favorite episode is probably Rookies all the way back in season 1.

That's actually a big complaint about the series Fraz. Back before it launched there was a lot of talk about it focusing more on the Clones and other stories that didn't include Anakin Skywalker/Obi Wan/That annoying Togruta no one gives a damn about. However the series as it turned out isn't like that and some people got really peeved. I think they were hoping for a show that followed the Clone Wars comic series, which is less Jedi centric and a fairly decent comic series.
