Things to keep in mind when fighting....

So yesterday I had an enlightening experience. I was playing a small 1000 point game and using Shrike, full assault squad, scout snipers, and a tactical + rhino. My opponent was running with dark eldar. I didn't think anything of it until I tried to assault his HQ+ honor guard equivalent where I found out that they all had power weapons and initiative 7. Predictably I got destroyed and it was down hill from there. After I talked will a couple people and they all said they deal with eldar from range. As a newer player I was unaware of this so I was wondering what was other things to keep in mind, or specific tactics to deal with certain armies?

example: Eldar have high initiative so avoid assault conflicts since they will most likely go first.

yeah both my mates run DE and Eldar and it's always a tuff fight. they can usually get me in an TA style battle but for objective battles i can usually hold out n contest.

i've herd that range is good to pop their transports and vehicles naturally my mates don't run any of that and my armys are more assault then ranged. the way i fight against them is tactically, try to maneuver into their weak spots, the real troubel here is that you have to know the army, use ranged on their cc and then run in and assault their ranged with a fast cc of yours, take them by surprise with speed and throw them off balance. for me the trick is to try and disrupt their movement, i try to lure them here or there of pose a big threat over there as a distraction.

i usually have a unit or 2 as suicidal units as in their only goal is to capture attention and force a response, they will die but it will give me time to do something else that will catch your opponent off guard n maybe give you the upper hand.

thats about all i can say for now since i'm still new to the game n havn't played alot but DE and Eldar i have played lol.

Re:Things to keep in mind when fighting....

Hello! I am relatively new to 40k after a long period of not playing and I am learning the ropes of my guard army and after a few games I learnt a few things already but theory always seems easier, well for me anyway.

First thing is to know thy enemy, which has been said already. For example, orks are cc oriented and hard units such as ork bikes and battlewagons, which should be taken care of first for example. Stop the assualt in no man's land and let them come towards you without their transports.

With eldar, yes, shoot them up before they get to you and as I play guard try to slow their advance with a tarpit unit, in my case a power blob so you give time for your other units to shoot. Of course I am saying this from a shooty army angle and not a CC one but the principle might be the same?

Against armies that have deepstrike ability I always try to remember to hold at least half my army in reserve and perhaps even a tank or two, quite a surprise for a group of terminators to suddenly see a demolisher cannon or medusa at close range after they deepstriked

For me it boils down to target practice, shoot at what can hurt you the most and concentrate on it till it is dead, rinse and repeat, well in theory anyway...

Also most importantly that it is a game and as long as you have fun then great, of course learn from your games and there is always next time.
