Question concerning Magnets

I would like to Magnetize my armies for transportation, my questions are

+ What Size Magnets are good for (Necron Warriors/Brettonian Men At Arms/Knights of the Realm) Basic Infantry and Cavalry basically?
+ What Size Magnets are good if I want to transport upside down and they still will be fine?
+ Where to get sheet metal the size of movement trays?
+ What Size Magnets are good for Vehicles to go upside down or just to keep from moving in a transport (Ghost Ark/Monsters/Land Raiders ect)

I am not necessarily going to put any of them upside down I am just wondering on the strength

Thanks

Re:Question concerning Magnets

There are a lot of magnetic basing posts out there, but here is what I did. I also know my local gaming store sold magnets for basing. I do not recall what brand name they were sold under.

I'm not sure what size fits your bases, I am using round plastic 30mm bases and ended up using 2.5mm x 2.5mm x 10mm neodymium bar magnets. There was no difference in depth for the different size bases I had (30 40 50mm), so I just planned on using more than one magnet for the bigger models. I went with bar magnets instead of the disc ones because I wanted to glue it to the side of the slot that holds the model as well as the top-inside surface (paranoid about the magnet being stronger than the glue).

I'm pretty sure the bases I'm using are deeper than the standard Warhammer ones, but I'm sure someone out there has measurements for your bases. It is also pretty easy to measure on your own, I used a toothpick to guage depth and a ruler laid across the base to mark the toothpick, then measure the depth. If it is less than 1/8 inch, you may want to try metric as it is easier to find smaller sizes. You want the surface of the magnet to be exactly flush with the bottom of the base to give maximum holding power.

As far as metal goes, someone recommend metal shingles on another forum, needs a saw to trim, very cheap, and easy to find. I have also heard that self adhesive flexible magnetic sheets work as well.

Hope this helps

Re:Question concerning Magnets

I've been playing around with various magnet now for almost a year. I really like the Primal Horizon line of magnets for most stuff. Rare Earth magnets are good for anything that needs to hang upside down. I used some RE magnets to hold my hurricane bolters on my storm ravens. I glued one magnet onto the inside of the door (so you couldn't see the magnet) and glued another on the hurricane bolter itself. The magnets are so strong they locked the HB's right through the door!

I've also used a product from Galeforce 9 that is a magnetic mat about 8" x 8". It comes along with some 25mm magnetic bases so you can replace your old bases on your troops and when you want to keep them steady during transport just put them on the mat.

Good luck magnetizing Necorn Warriors! I looked into that for the new immortals so I could switch out guns. Due to their skeleton nature it's hard to do.
