Necron Immortals vs Warriors

Greetings fellow fiends of Dakka, I require your aid.

As a (relativly) newcomer to wh40k tabeltop and as a college student with limited funds I find myself at an important juncture for my army construction.

My army currently only has 24Xwarriors as its tropp choice and I was wonderng before making another purchase, whether Immortals or Warriors would be better in numbers?

I know that warriors are cheaper(in pts and cash) and their added numbers help in survivability(until they get in CC and swept)
But immortals have stronger weapons and varity in the form of tesla and gauss blasters and with the Traveller can receive a free upgrade too

So which is the better troop choice? Is there some golden ratio like a squad of 10xImmortals and 2 squads of 12xwarriors?

P.S. Which of the immortals weapons looke cooler/easier to assemble, Tesla or gauss?

Re:Necron Immortals vs Warriors

I think it really depends on how you plan on running your army and what supporting units you are taking. In my limited experience a blob of 20 warriors with a rez lord are extremely resilient. So far I have been just running mostly warriors and been using immortals with gauss as a tank busting squad using Nems and VoD. I have yet to try ghost arks with a warrior blob, but it looks potent on paper being able to bring back D3 lost crons a turn. Honestly, if your funds are limited I would go warriors. You get more for your money and you get those much needed scarabs. I would definitly run at least one squad of immortals. Also unless you plan on putting a phaeron in the immortals or popping them around with a VoD like I do to get rear and side armor, I would suggest going tesla as you can walk and shoot your full range. Those are my thoughts. Curious to see others' on the matter though.

Also, fyi, I can't really say how well immortals do with a VoD. I've been having bad luck with the scatter lately, so they haven't done much. On the other hand they haven't been completely killed yet either so it is hard to say.

I have yet to try it out myself, but taking a squad of Tesla Immortals and a VeilTek sounds like fun!
As per the topic, Go ahead and get at least one box of Immortals and test it out to see if you like them or not.

Necron Immortals vs Warriors

I would proxy both to see what you like.

For me, you really have 3 options with Warriors
1. 20 Man super squad, supported by a fully decked out Overlord with all the trimmings, including relentless. In addition You can run this with your flavor of more lords/crypteks. I've seen Frontline gaming run them with a veiltek, and do very well.

2. Group of 8-9 Warriors in a Ghost Ark, with Lanceteks. Great unit for holding objectives, and can preform light anti-tank duties.

3. 5 man Grot squad for sitting in reserve, and claiming rearfield objectives. I use this a lot myself.

Personally, I've been using Immortal squads lately with Tesla Carbines, and they have been doing very well. I find they rarely get focused on until later in the game, as my enemy has other more pressing matters to worry about. Throw a lancetek or 2 into this unit, and it's really solid.

So, I would say it REALLY depends on the rest of your List. Necrons remind me a lot of Nids, in that you want everything to work in concert together.

Lately I've started using a mix of 1x large (12+) Warrior unit, 1x Immortal unit and 1x min Warrior unit.

Nominally, I'd like to use only Immortals, but I run a very pricey gunline army and so I rarely have lots of extra points to spend on troops.

Necron Immortals vs Warriors

I feel the beauty of Immortals are that they work effectively on their own. Sure adding in a lancetek is very very helpful but they can and will perform their role without any help from court members or HQs.

Warriors on the other had are cheaper but the more I look at them the more I see an average unit that forces you to invest a lot of points to make it a good unit.

Looking at the best layout for Warriors 20 Warriors w/ Lord- WS, MSS, Orb. It'll run you 350 points. For 10 points cheaper I can run 20 Immortals and leave room for a Court member in both squads. The Immortals are more durable to shooting as each wound is .21 dead Immortals where a wound is .25 dead Warriors. This is assuming both get their RP and armor save. The Warriors are more durable to assault however with the Lord support. The Str5 guns the Immortals pack is what puts them over the edge in my mind. It is also much harder to come by Ap3 than it is Ap4.

That said they are fairly close, but for foot troops I would go with Immortals. I think warriors should be in Arks or reserve.

There are some good options - Immortals with Veiltek is basically a classic unit. I like to run a big block of Warriors with a Phaeron... Fairly cheap for what you in my opinion. Some people like to run small squads of Warriors with two lanceteks.

Necron Immortals vs Warriors

As a fanatic celebrant Of the newcrondex I've come up with a pretty simple determinant for choosing warriors or immortals.

If you need independence among your units and mobility in your list, go with immortals. Their s5 guns and the option of tesla or gauss combined with their 3+ means that a squad of immortals can be effective for all three functions of troops: holding objectives, battling infantry, and laying down some basic shooting, which can be improved by crypteks.

Warriors have some great uses as well; a giant blob
Attached to a phaeron is a wall of fire, and though they may fold in assault, that can be mitigated by the use of royals. In ghost arks, they're a hearty objective holder, that can glance vehicles to death and lay wounds on approaching infantry; and in small 5x squads they can house special weapon crypteks and/or claim late game objectives while remaining expendable; but in general you get just a bit more than ÿöú pay for, as they are easily swept in assault due to the low initiative.

I like warriors in huge numbers, and immortals in elite lists. If you look at immortals as a 4ppm upgrade that gives ÿöú a 3+ save and an S5 weapon, they're a bargain over warriors, but if you consider that you can have 60 warriors instead of 40 immortals for practically the same price, that might make ÿöú look at them differently.

Thanks for the input guys. I knew I should have listed what I currently have and what I plan to have(which is in parenthesis below) to help with the advice, better late than never I suppose, here goes:

HQ:
2x Overlords
1x CCB
1x Destroyer lord
1x Lord
1x cryptek(conversions will be done but not sure how many)

Troops:
24x Warriors

Elites:
5xlychguard
(2-3 stalkers)

Fast attack:
6 scarabs
(5 tomb blades)
(12 wraiths)

Heavy Support:
1x Monolith
(2 doom scythes)
(2-3 annihilation arks)

I think I'll get one more kit of warriors for the scarabs and so I have a nice number of 36, but it seems atleast 10xImmortals is a great idea too...

Necron Immortals vs Warriors

Exalted Pariah wrote:Its not an army list, its what I currently have model-wise(with the parenthesis representing planned future purchases) so that the advice I'm looking for, what else would be a good investment, which would aid in advice giving.

I should buy some destroyers too, how many would be an ok amount?

My bad, sorry.
---

I'm still math/theory-hammering a jump-cron gimmick list - so far I think it's a wash, but it has made me think about destroyers in different ways.

Heavy Destroyers are a reasonably viable fire support option for a gunline necron army - They seem a bit expensive on paper, but in practical application they're actually pretty useful if you can minimize their target priority, or supplement them with a gauss stalker, potentially both. They're mobile and resilient with high strength guns; and can nest a Rezorb d.lord until its time to unleash him into cc. They aren't as good as they used to be, but they still fill a useful slot. If you're not using all your FA slots on Wraiths and Scarabs (Far superior units) then your list most likely is a shooting list that could benefit from some high strength focused fire.

As far as value for your dollar, the Annihilation barge kit is a pretty good deal by GW standards - you get an overlord and two of the most effective variant vehicle options for a decent price. The kit is a bitch compared to a rhino, but pretty nice looking and chock full of conversion bits.

Hopefully we'll catch a second wave with the new Wraiths, spyders, tomb blades, scythes, and stalkers - as existing wraiths and spyders are selling on ebay as if they were made of gold.

There are a lot of good suggestions out there for converting crypteks, and Reecius over at Frontlinegaming has posted tutorials on making converted wraiths out of ghost arks and immortals; they look pretty cool.
