Sculpting mist

So as the title implies, I'm a little stuck. I've started my wraithguard conversions, using necron warriors converted with conversion bits I've cast to keep the look uniform. My issue now, is that I want to model some mist around them. The farseers I've got with the units are almost always going to be using the conceal power, and I like the idea of the Eldar souls animating them to be swirling loosely around the wraithbone constructs.

The only ideas I have so far are as follows:

1. I've read about people using cotton balls that they've teased out. However, I feel this might look cheap at best. At worst, the consensus seems to be that this is prone to damage and doesn't last too long.

2. Custom bases, that I can cast copies of. They'd be sculpted around a wraithguard held in place with sticky tack, and I could shape the souls with greenstuff and get some good detail. However, I only have what I'd call moderate or intermediate ability with greenstuff. This seems like it might be too much to tackle at my skill level, but it's not something I'm willing to write off. If I managed the sculpt, I'd just have to cast them in a clear resin that I could cloud with some white or blue inks.

3. Inspired by the little plate I got with my Chaos landraider for my ork conversions, you know, the plate with the face surfacing from beneath it? I could just sculpt impressions of faces and hands pressing out from the model. I'm not big on this idea, as I may get Chaos-looking Eldar, if it doesn't look outright weird.

If anyone has any ideas or suggestions, I'm all ears. I'm still leaning towards #2 I think, but I feel like there are probably options I'm not aware of yet.

I would think bleaching white (or finding white) long static grass and building up long strands of it with glue might work, i have some pretty fluffy effects on my bases by accident that could work well if you could figure out how to do it on purpose.

I think #2 is probably the only option that is going to give you satisfactory results. And even then I'm a bit iffy. It is going to take some real painting and sculpting skills to make it not look like you just have odd white clumps floating around.

Good luck. I look forward to seeing what you come up with.

Do you want the effect to be a permanent feature of the mini or something you add when the power is in effect to represent it?

If it's the latter you could construct something out of clear plastic which could be painted and/or you could put glue on it to make a distorted/mist effect (like the effect you get if you accidently get glue on clear plastic components).

I see where you're going with the fogging effect from glue, but I keep picturing what you suggest as more of a "screen" of plasticard, rather than a 3d sculpt. Was that what you meant?

For option#2, you should check out the Warmachine Cryx line for pre-sculpted souls. Namely the Malice (Upgrade Kit) Blister Packet [PIP 34085]. Those are about $10 USD and come with 3 souls in each blister. They're on top of the warjack pictured below.

Thought about it, and the Malice bits don't look too bad. A little weedy, but even with my greenstuffing abilities I should be able to do what I need. I'd still likely be looking to cast a set of bases from it after, but the whole intellectual property thing may become an issue. Or not, I don't know.
