The other way i can think of would be to very carefully sponge on some duty colours with... well... some sponge.

The foam you got in the back of blister packs is perfect. You just tear a little bit off, dip it in the paint, dab off almost all the paint on a paper towel and then carefully dab it where you want dirt and dust.
The most important thing is to make sure your only dabbing, not moving from side to side
