Aquatic Marines

So I have been looking around on the internet and I can't seem to find anything on a Space Marine army that specializes in actual water and beach warfare. To me it seems that the Imperium would have at least a few planets with a whole lot of water. Does anyone know of such an Space Marine force. If so what is the name and where could I find some more information on them?

Pony_law wrote:(snip) But for the record every marine can breath underwater so they could just fight in the oceans if they wanted to.

I know that if they needed to any marine could fight underwater. I was more curious if they were an GW chapters that would specialize in it. I got the idea of the Fighting Tigers of Verda(sp?) site and was wondering if they (GW) had any. I'm really just too lazy to make my own chapter about it lol. If there isn't one then I guess I will have to make my own after all. Anybody have some ideas regarding that if there is no GW chapter?

Carcharadons (Space Sharks) have absolutely nothing to do with water... Im sure there is one chapter out there that does, seriously just make up your own... nothing like basing your marines on one of the lesser known chapters only to have Black Library release a novel about it that shoots your army background to hell (or makes you hate your chosen chapter)

Pony_law wrote:Drop pods and thunderhawks would make beachs largely irrelavent in a fight.

That too... The sort of world where you replace the famous Space Marine air power with naval power would have to be pretty horrible. Constant lightning storms and charged cloud cover playing merry hell with air transports? Or heavier gravity, enough that AdMech air designs aren't approved for use without special modifications but marines can live without problems?

Or just some place with pretty much only water and underwater settlements? A few airports to get down but after that you'll need submarines to get anywhere?

Re:Aquatic Marines

Naval warfare isn't important enough to have a whole chapter dedicated to it.
So if you want one, create one.
Surely, some chapters recrut on worlds where seafaring is the 1st choice for travel. Underwater settlements and mining is also an option with the range of environments a million worlds provide. Still the greek themed Iron Snakes would be one candidate if you just want a background where the Seas are a factor.
Generally marines fight in every environment. SW for example have been reported to assail Tau from the bottom of the Sea.

Yeah, as I understand it, Power Armor is capable of handling both extreme pressures and hard vacuum equally as well, so marines have no issue conducting sub aquatic operations... though I think (if memory serves correctly) they use a slightly modified helmet for underwater ops. IIRC, it was shown in the Dawn of War I game manual amongst other places.

Re:Aquatic Marines

Two sea wars spring immediately to mind, though there are certainly others.

One being the extermination of the Laer by Fulgrim and the Emporer's Children during the Great Crusade. This wasn't limited to the sea, but included aquatic combat against the Laer, who used genetic manipulation to create combatants specialized to their task. Fluff here is slightly questionable, since the book Fulgrim set this during the Crusade, while it was originally put well after the Emporer's internment in the golden throne.

Probably more useful to the dicussion at hand is the Space Wolves attacking the underwater cities of the Tau.

In 966.M41, the Tau fought against the Adeptus Astartes of the Space Wolves Chapter during the War for Kvarium Alpha. On that water-clogged world, drop pods landed deep in the oceans where their occupants made a move to engage their enemy. On the surface, the battle was fought between the two sides with an equally deadly conflict erupting in the depths of the sea between the Space Wolves and Tau Battlesuits. Thunderhawk Gunships were used to great effect against Hammerhead tanks and Manta gunships with torpedoes, prop-bombs and missiles being used against the Tau. Ultimately, the Space Wolves proved to be the victor in the conflict where hundreds of Tau and Space Wolf corpses floated to the surface. With their mission complete, the Space Wolves made the long trek back to land across the sea bed.

The Wolves also drove their Land Raiders straight across the seabed to attack the cities. To me, it seems that the versatility of the Astartes in general makes specializing in water combat difficult- the multi-lung all Astartes possess allows them to breathe in water anyway, and the tools and tactics available to them, as demonstrated by the Space Wolves, allows them to be far less impeded by aquatic environments than, say, an Imperial Guard regiment.

All that said, there's no reason that some given chapter couldn't specialize in these sort of attacks, the way the Imperial Fists are prodigous at fortification, or the White Scars at speedy tactics. My only concern would be the Snow Job/Aquaman efect:

http://video.adultswim.com/robot-chicken/gi-jerks.html
