Colour advice. (Dark angels assault Seargent) (WIP shot included)

Hi,

Ok I'm painting up a DA assault squad and I'm 3/5 completed. I'm currently in the middle of painting up my sarge. Fluffwise I'm taking the general concensus that since most assault marines are drawn from the first company, and 1st company of DA is deathwing, that I should paint some part of the squad in deathwing colours (Bleached bone basically) and I've decided to do the shoulders of them bleached bone with dwarven bronze trim highlighted with shining gold. That's gonna be the squadman's general look. (see my gallery)

The Seargent I want to stand apart, he's built using a corvus helm, bandolier chest, corvus greaves and corvus shoulderguard, the other shoulder is a MK7 standard shoulderguard from the DA box set, i've given him some bitz from the DA veterans box like one of the holsters and a lil DA symbol for the jump pack and I'm mounting a DA banner top (not the banner, just the angel top) onto the top of the jump pack. I'm giving him a combat sheild and a power axe.

The problem has occoured whereby I can't work out how to differentiate him as a seargent. I was initially going to paint him entirely in DW colours like a DW terminator, just with regular power armour and a jump pack, but I feel that's a bit silly. Then I figured do the shoulders and the helm like DW colours, however that's not really aesthetically pleasing, it's a line of bleached bone across a figure that's mostly gonna be DA green. The greaves don't have kneepads so painting one of them white and the corresponding shoulder white is not exactly feasible either. Really hit painters block on this one!

So that's it in a (rather large and long winded) nutshell. What do you guys think?

**Edit**

Ok here's a pic so far. The intention is to do the beak the same colour as the shoulders, to break it up, but I don't know what to do the Bandolier, I wanna do the skull in the middle Dwarven bronze and brush it with shining gold but past that I'm stumped. The Aquila on the chest is going to be white/bleached bone that's a given but what about the bandolier?

Vanguard Assault Marines are, but never heard that regular assault marines are considered part of the first. Fluff wise each company has assigned squads of assault marines (I think something like 6 Tactical Squads, 2 Assault, and 2 Devastator Squads).

The Sgt may possibly be detailed from the 1st company, but that is not that common either though.

Besides the questions about the fluff, I do like the way your model is turning out though. Looks pretty good and I like the colors.

Assault marines have nothing to do with 1st company. DA's 1st company always (ALWAYS!) fights in terminator armour and never (really, never!) fights in power armour, so your sgt. could maybe be a veteran sgt., but not Deathwing.

I appear to have made a mistake then. Seems that I read that "Vanguard Veterans are members of the 1st Company of a Space Marine Chapter." (Source: Lexicanum) and presumed the above. However as it stands I'm happy with the overall look of the squad and think I'll paint my assaulters like this in future anyways.

Anyways here's an updated WIP shot. Still need to edge highlight the green and do some more detail on the power axe.

Colour advice. (Dark angels assault Seargent) (WIP shot included)

Looks pretty nice.

The only thing that jumps out is that the white on the jump pack looks dirty, but that is a problem with whites and washes. The only fix for that is to cover all the dirty parts with white again while trying to keep any of it from going into the spots where you want to keep the wash. So I usually don't mess around with it too much myself.

Are you doing anything else to the base, or just paint the sand?

Re:Colour advice. (Dark angels assault Seargent) (WIP shot included)

I am liking the look of the model and might do something similar on my 2 squads of assault troops. Only thing is the gold doesn't quite look right. I have found that a layer of tin bits with a dry brush of gold goes a long way when making things that are trimmed in gold looking like relics. or it might just be the lighting.

and a little bit of fluff
There is nothing that says that Veterans or regular assault marines come from the deathwing (dark angels codex). It does say however that the deathwing does draw from these squads either they be tactical, assault, or devastators but they are put into terminator armor only. Also as stated above Dark angels don't have any veteran jump infantry.

But to counter this:
According to the book "Angels of Darkness" there are only certain circumstances where deathwing don't wear terminator armor. IIRC Interrogator-Chaplain Boreas (a member of the inner circle because of being a chaplain) had to advance a small squad of dark angels into the deathwing that weren't veterans just because he told them of the inner circle secrets of the hunt for the fallen so they could hunt Cypher (The Ultimate Fallen member). And with being on a remote recruiting planet (Piscina V) they didn't have access to the terminator armor so they painted the regular power armor the trademark bone white of the deathwing.

So you can see you could just really make up your own twist on it so it really doesn't matter since they are your models and what not.

@ Loken, cheers for the education flufwise and regarding the tin bitz/gold thing. It's a bit darker IRL, could be the post processing of the RAW file and then the compression into JPEG that's rendered it a wee bit eye-watering.

As for the Jump packs being dirty, I was considering fixing this but I don't really know where to paint to. Might just leave it like that because ultimately, they're air intakes for a jump pack, I guess the whole pack should be a bit dirty,

As for basing. I'm gonna just put a bit more sand on it because I've scratched a decent bit of it off while painting the guy and I'm intending on jus drybrushing it from adeptus battlegrey up to space wolves grey, I've done an identical thing with my jump chaplain and figure that I should paint them all the same.
