The whisperer in darkness

The DVD arrived in the mail today and within 5 minutes it was in my DVD player. I'm so glad they made this one a "Talkie", silent movies irritate me to no end. See below for the horrible truths

Spoiler:

While using CGI to render the Mi-Go sort of took the picture out of the period, it would have been impossible to portray them by use of an actor in a costume, and using stop-motion or marionettes would have been too limiting. Anyway, it succeeded in making them seem as otherworldly as H. P. Lovecraft depicted them in the story. All in all, it was very enjoyable.

I would like to see more Lovecraft stories made into movies, preferably "The color out of space" or "Rats in the walls".

Amaya wrote:Rats in the Walls, Shadow over Innsmouth, and Strange Case of Charles Dexter Ward please.

Gaah! How could I have forgotten about Shadow Over Innsmoth. There was a terrible Syfy movie made that was a failed attempt at a modernization of it, called Dagon. It sucked out loud. A real faithful film of that story would be so awesome, it would drive the faint of heart from the theaters straight into a padded cell and a ferocious opiate addiction.

I don't know if SyFy made Dagon, but that's where I watched it.

I have to agree with Mannahnin, though. I didn't hate it. It was something good to have on while I painted.

If you want a good Lovecraft film, check out The Call of Cthulhu on Netflix. It's a silent film, but it's pretty brilliant.

The whisperer in darkness

It wasn't made for Sci-fi. I know I saw it on DVD before Sci-fi ever had it. The original script had it set in New England, but that was when it was written in the 80's. By the time it got financed in 2000 it had to be done elsewhere because of budget constraints. Still, considering the budget I thought it was a decent little attempt at a Lovecraftian story.

What about the homage to Lovecraft by John Carpenter, In the Mouth of Madness?

The whisperer in darkness

Dagon clearly wasn't what I'd call a great movie, but it was one of the best Lovecraft adaptations (from a pretty weak field, admittedly).

I'm still hoping Del Toro gets a shot at making At the Mountains of Madness someday. But I understand why it'd be a very tough sell to a studio.
