question about chaos daemons from a 40k'er

So when I started 40k, I chose daemons because they seemed absolutely BOSS: all invulnerables, eternal warrior, rules that other armies would kill for on my basic troops (nyeh nyeh, your hive tyrant can be insta-gibbed by GK's but my W1 troops have EW )
anyways, it turned out they weren't very good, and I can almost hear people silently judging me for fielding them, before I (usually) beat their face. I don't have the money to start a new army, so I deal with it, no matter how cool the newcrons are...

Then I heard tell that over in fantasy, Daemons aren't mocked and derided, but instead people actually respect them or something. So what I'm asking is this: in terms of how good the fantasy daemon's book is, how would you equate them to a 40k codex? like, are daemons in fantasy like orks are in 40k, wiping out people who don't know how to deal with them but subpar in tournament play? are they as feared as SW or GK, eg, everyone screams they are OP but they're just above par? or are they like IG, silently a fantastic codex? I'm just curious.

thanks!

question about chaos daemons from a 40k'er

Daemons in WHFB are one of the better armies. I'm not really gonna go into details (I have to go soon) but Bloodletters and Flamers are amazing. Only downside with the army book is that some units are sooo good but some are sooo bad/too expensive so you're "forced" to play a certain way, at least if you want to have a decent list.

Re:question about chaos daemons from a 40k'er

They were the codex that people claimed killed 7th edition with their OPness. Now it's not as bad, but they still have some NASTY tricks.

I think the biggest problem with Daemons in 40k is their randomness. In Fantasy, no randomness, Instant Death doesn't really exist, and you still have frightening things (Bloodletters are strength 5, you can have access to any magic through Tzeentch, wards on everyone (invulnerables in Fantasy). They're pretty awesome. And they use the same models, so all you need to do is magnetize them to movement trays as their square bases are the same size as their round ones. XD

Re:question about chaos daemons from a 40k'er

No... randomness?
s-s-sorcery...

I actually really like flamers in 40k, they are almost a good replacement for actual close combat units: a 4 man squad will break a squad with one round of flaming, kill an av12 vehicle with bolt (which, despite the price, should be brought in almost all higher point games and some lower ones), or safely harass a unit with warpfire. a 5 man squad will do any of the above, but wipe out anything short of thundershields (they'll kill 4 in a 5 man squad).

I used to fear paladins, but then the flamers burned them. A 170 point squad obliterating a 275 pt squad = win.
they work really well when paired with bloodcrushers to assault whoever is left...

thanks for the responses, i was also wondering how good lizardmen were...

question about chaos daemons from a 40k'er

Yeah I collect Daemons for 40k, but I also play fantasy so I went and bought the fantasy book for them, overall my impressions of the army are they are pretty good.

Certainly better than Daemons in 40k.

question about chaos daemons from a 40k'er

Muppas has it pretty well. 40K you're screwed from the start because your guys randomly show up (thanks, gods!).

But there are some units you will never use because they suck very bad. And there are some units that are absurdly good.

Flamers are ranged. You're not going to really beat down CC troops with them at cost. They are too expensive for that.

So the "problem" with them is you really have like 1/2 the useable units that other armies have. 90% of the time you will see a ton of bloodletters. Because they are crazy good. No weird Defiler thing though.

Re:question about chaos daemons from a 40k'er

awww.... SG is one of my favorite units...

Yeah, bloodletters are subpar in 40k because they can't assault when they come in, and are expensive as marines without ATSKNF, combat tactics, or any sort of durability besides the t4. Always getting a crappy save is still a crappy save...
