Tactical viability of dreadnaughts.

I'm trying to decide whether to stick more Dreadnaughts in my SM list. In. 1K point list I have three, two with 2 TL Autocans and one with TL-LC and an ML. I'm also considering taking a Master of the Forge for the extra HS slot dreads, although I'm unsure if that many dreads would be a good idea. In my 2k point list I also have a LRC, so I'd have a total of 6 Dreads in my 1500 point list and 5 in my 2000. At the moment, I'm playing against DE and a dark lance spam (it's the only way my friend can reliably take out my necrons), and I will soon be playing against another friend and his tau (and his Hammerhead, as he likes reminding me). I'm planning on dropping one in first turn in one of them snazzy drop pods, if that helps anything.

Well, in the small list all of your dreads are long range, so I'm not seeing the advantage of the pod unless you want to delay your deployment. Your probably better putting the points to another use. I run dreads frequently and they can be quite viable vs certain builds, and are decent all-round... though I prefer one heavy weapon and one CCW with flamer as they're much more viable that way and present a credible assault threat. For example... giving up one ML shot for the heavy flamer and CCW and an extra attack is a pretty good deal in my experience.

Double TL Autocannon dread (Rifleman) is either very useful or close to useless depending on what you're facing. Vs. DE with all those raiders and such is probably a pretty good fit.

Tactical viability of dreadnaughts.

I love Dreads, although I don't field as many as the OP.

I'd echo Gitsplitta about the one range/one CCW arm, though not sure where the extra attack is coming from? They would only get an extra attack if two CCWs were fitted. But certainly makes them very useful in a TAC list.

If you are going to drop pod one, if you can, use a Melta dread, with the inertial guidance on the pod, you can afford to take risks with where you choose to ds, meaning that unless your dice rolls are really unlucky, (or your dread appears to have cross eyes like mine!) you can normally get a close range melta shot off at your opponents priority target in your first shooting phase.

Yep azreal13, you're right. My bad. No extra attack. Still worth the trade in my opinion though.

How about an Assault Cannon? Or would a MM+DCCW w/ HF be superior?

Tactical viability of dreadnaughts.

I've seen arguments both ways. Either of those would be appropriate for a podded in dread as their range is short... so you could, say... pod the MM dread w/in 12" of an opponent's vehicle getting double penetration. Thing to keep in mind is that unless you can get him some support, his *ss is really hanging in the wind then. I'm not a big fan of assault cannons... granted 4 shots, but only a 1 in 6 rend and really not effective vs. much without it.

Which is a damn shame by-the-way. I'm from the early days of 40k when a terminator with an assault cannon ruled the battlefield. Real shame to see them diminished so severely.

Tactical viability of dreadnaughts.

Agreed, a dp dread is almost def a sacrificial unit, but that firepower in your opponents face turn one is almost always going to cause disruption, and ultimately the more decisions you force your opponents to make, the more likely they'll make a bad one. Then there's that one game in a while where it will wreak havoc and win a game almost singlehandedly!
