Kung Fu Hamster's n00b-tacular P&M blog

As I was putting the finishing touches on my Kabalite warrior, I got an idea: Start a Dakka P&M blog to catalog my progress as a builder and painter. I don't know how long these models (or their paint jobs) will last, so this seems like a good place to keep track of things.

So over the weekend I headed up to the new (and only) GW store in town to try playing a game with someone who knew what they were doing, rather than with my nearly equally clueless (but enthusiastic) fiancee. Once I got a better understanding of the game as a whole (and figured out a lot of my mistakes), I picked up a Dark Eldar battleforce and began building.

Here's my (mostly) built Raider. Unfortunately, my battleforce seems to be short a stand, so I had to improvise to make sure none of the little fiddly bits (and there are a LOT on this model) broke off. I'm still debating on whether or not to keep the spears in place or cannibalize them unto pain tokens somehow.

Random DE crew just chillin' on some cork:

ZOOM ZOOM! Three Reavers (only one with a pilot, as the other two had issues getting into position):

And my first painted Dark Eldar model! I did my best to follow along with LBursey's tutorial for painting Obsidian Rose DE, but I still need to work on my technique a lot, specifically blending highlights. It's not easy to see in the pic there, but my highlights tend to look very stark and fake.

And as a bonus, I picked up a box of Killa Kanz, as my fiancee wants to use them for wedding cake toppers next year. So far, I've only got one assembled:

This one will be the bride. I'm plannng on putting a wedding veil on it and a bouquet of flowers in the claw. As I still have all the models from AoBR, I also plan on using the kanz in matches while my DE force is being built. In order to avoid any potential problems with the cake itself, I'm going to magnetize the kanz so I can easily remove them from the base to plop onto the (expensive; seriously, weddings are crazy expensive) cake.

As I'm juggling work and school and wedding planning and Emperor knows what else, I'm not even going to try maintaining anything close to a schedule. Nevertheless, I'll be sure to update this blog whenever I can squeeze in the time.

The colour of the armour on your DE is really nice. Rather unique too.
I've been fighting an awful chest cold this past week, so I wasn't able to get anything done until today.

Here's my first squad of Kabalites thus far:

First three:

Next three w/my Sliscus model:

You'll notice something odd about the Duke: Much like the drummer from Def Leapord, he;s only got one arm. I originally wanted to use the extra power sword from the Wych sprue, but it turns out it's for the same side the kabalite sword is for, thus leaving the poor Duke incomplete until I can find a suitable sword arm for him.

This weekend I'm planning on finishing building this squad, priming them, and getting a couple more painted. If this damned plague will finally go away, that is.

Saturday was painting & building day.

I managed to get my squad of kabalites finished:

I wasn't paying as much attention as I should've been to the various parts I was using and ended up with one rather derpy-looking warrior holding his splinter rifle with one arm trying to be Rambo. So I gave him a knife in his other hand and have designated him the squad Gomer Pyle and will always be the first one to die.

I also got my squad of Reavers painted up as well. As an experiment, I primed these in black to see how the color scheme I'd picked would turn out.

The first thing I thought of when I saw the finished models was an old Trans-Am with a pudgy guy jamming out to Journey and letting his mullet fly in the breeze, trying to look as cool as possible while not realizing everyone around him is laughing at the fact that he's stuck in the 1970s. I may end up stripping and repainting them with a white primer in the near future.

Next weekend: Wyches!

After a few busy weekends, I finally had a chance to sit down and get some serious painting done. I decided to shelve my Wyches for a bit while I finalize the process I want to use for my army's color scheme. After a few trial-and-error attempts, I got the scheme and process down.

And now, I give you the first squad of Kabalite Warriors of the Kabal of the Blood Ocean:

(And yes, I was listening to Dethklok when painting these, why do you ask? )

Re:Kung Fu Hamster's n00b-tacular P&M blog

Long time without an update, I know. Life has a way of getting in the way at times.

So this weekend I was goofing off on youtube when I saw WarbossTae (one of the 40k painters I've subscribed to) proposing a group army build project, sort of a day-by-day posting of progress on everyone's projects and whatnot. As I'm currently needing a bit of motivation to get my 1800+ points of Dark Eldar painted, I thought it'd be a good idea. I won't be able to show a hell of a lot every single day in June, but it could be helpful. We'll see.

As for this weekend, I picked up another Venom, along with a unit of Wracks and a Talos Pain Engine I plan on magnetizing to be able to swap out all the various components. I'll be ordering the magnets tonight after figuring out what exactly I need. Or I'l just get a group of various magnets from MiniWarGaming.com.

I've also spent some extra time working on bases. I grabbed some of the new texture and dry paints to get the already painted models glued to their bases.

A quick layer of Astrogranite, some Nuln Oil, and a Longbeard Grey drybrush for an easy ashen wasteland base.

For the models not already glued to bases (Wracks and Incubi), I have something much nicer ready.

Some cork board, sand, black primer, and dry brushing different greys, and I've got some kick-ass bases ready to go.

I've also got my Duke Sliscus model built and about 1/3rd finished.

I scavenged some bits from a box of Dark Elf Corsairs to give him the pomp and flair he requires.

Next up for painting: Scourges.
