Good 40k Training game?

Well Gents,
I am going back into the fray. My gaming group basically died out last year and I have not played since. I was a big BA Assault guy, Loved the melta-spam SW, and was starting to dabble with some Chaos. What has changed in the last year? I stopped right around the release of the GK. So anything I missed? Basically a nice summary would be fantastic gents.

Anyway, I am going to try and get a friend into it. With that said, I need to hurry and throw an army together over the next week or so to see if I can get him into it. This will require some quick painting and such to fully give him a nice taste of the 40k play, without the hassle . Anyway, can anyone to decent army lists to play against each other for a training game maybe 500 pts? Maybe Orks vs IG? Or a quick Orks vs SM? Two different play styles might buzz some more interest.

I can do the AoBR, but I was thinking their might be something a bit more interesting. I am open to suggestions, price is not an issue, just something that can be easily thrown together and painted quickly would be nice. If anyone has any completed mini-armies I could purchase that wouldn't hurt.

As always, thanks in advance gents!

Good 40k Training game?

Right now I have a ton of friends that are getting into 40k. I am rather new to the game, having been playing only a couple months. The easiest armies to learn on are marines, specifically vanilla marines. The problem is that none of them are playing armies that I know.

That being said, I learned playing Dark Eldar. It wasn't as easy, but I love the fluff and style. I am still working on proper tactics, but playing this army I feel that I have learned a lot.

Basically, marines will be the easiest to teach them. They are decently forgiving, and are probably the best all-around army.

If he is really in love with a particular army's fluff, I'd say go for it! It's better to have an army that you really like, than one you can just win with.

Re:Good 40k Training game?

I agree with the above. Also in order to get people interested, get them a challenging loss on their first game i.e screw up a bit but don't give them an easy win either or they'll get bored with it. They also expect to no be very good but make sure they kill at least a few of your units to get some satisifcation. Personally I think wolves are a great first starter army as they are quite easy to make, cheap, and easy to use. Shoot shoot shoot and are decent to even good in assault without trying too hard.

Personally though, in order to practice more against myself, I made a daemon army and so far love it. I don't know what I'll deploy or where they will end up. Can't get much better than that for fighting yourself.

Thanks for the ideas gents.

Most of the students are into the Blood Angels (go figure). They were a former primary army of mine before I switched to SW. Anyway, I will definitely take in much of the advice.

I was thinking of also building a small ork horde army to possibly show the students the shear number of models at such a low point game that is possible. Also the "green tide" is very fun to watch move across the board, although tedious.

Orks are a nice, simple horde army for someone new to pickup on, there's no confusing elements like you have in Imperial Guard (Platoons and Such) or Tyranids (Synapse and bio-morphs.

They're just big, smelly, and green.

And though I'm loathe to say it, Vanilla Marines are a nice starter too; decent units, easy to learn Codex, and alot of options.

Yeah, I'd go for a small infantry-only game with an HQ, two troops, and like one support unit. Enough to lay down rules for movement and shooting (and possibly assault, though I wouldn't start with any assault-specific units for a player's first time), without getting into more expansive parts of the rules like vehicles or any other non-infantry type unit.

Also make sure to give him up to a 2:1 advantage so that he stands a chance at winning. If you do it where you give your opponent a expensive model army like space marines and you take a cheap model army like orks or guard, it will be easier to disguise this.

Sounds fun.

You know, in this case you might want to give them a few tanks (of the shooty variety), and then not give yourself anti-tank weapons. That way they get to be even more awesome without needing to bring any of the vehicle rules into play (other than what they can shoot when they move).
