Let's Talk 1911s

Yep, another gun thread. Sorry.

I've been contemplating picking up a 1911 for quite a while now, and I've always held off. I love my HK45C, but I have tiny little carnie hands, and Mr. Browning apparently designed the 1911 exclusively for me. It fits better and I shoot it better than anything else I've ever touched. The HK's a beautiful if soulless thing, but the 1911 softly sings my name while pouring me a glass of scotch and lighting my cigarette. I can only resist such seduction for so long.

The candidates have been narrowed down to the Dan Wesson Valor and the Les Baer Custom Carry. We're going fairly high end, as I only have a few more months of being utterly irresponsible with my money left. The Valor (or Valor Bobtail, haven't decided) should win this; it's more accurate than I'll ever be, the VBOB in particular's designed for carry, and it's a good-looking gun. I'm ashamed to admit, however, that the allure of the hand-crafted, guaranteed 3" group at 50 yards Baer is preventing me from pulling the trigger on the Valor. Baer won't bobtail their guns, so as a carry piece, it's not as good. It's uglier. You have to break it in. But it's a hundred bucks more for arguably a better gun.

So, if you had $1800 to play with, which would you go with?

The 1911, i just a gorgeous gun, no joking. With the kind of cash your talking, Id ask myself these questions

Do I want a 1911 and add some modifications?
Do I want a 1911 and not do modifications?

Which ever one you answer yes to, youll get a better idea of where to start. If yes to modifications, then obviously go a cheaper 1911, and with the money left over, youl be able to add some nice touched to it. For example, Im really considering buying a Rock River Arms 1911, because you can get them pretty cheap, which leaves you tons of cash for making it better and more to your liking.

If yes to not modding it, well then, start looking at some really nice, well known name brands, because with those, sure they cost alot, but you are getting the best of the best, and therefor you wont need to mod it at all

Re:Let's Talk 1911s

Well, even if I get the Les Baer, I'll probably eventually have a gunsmith do some work on it. I'd really like to get a bobtail cut on the grip, for example, and since I'm not going to spring for the 1.5" groups at 50 yards guarantee - 3" groups at 50 yards is more accurate than I'll ever shoot already - I may have Severns Customs do one of their accuracy packages at a later date. I won't be modifying it myself, though, which is why I'm looking at the price point I'm looking at.

Got a quote on a Baer Custom Carry with no front cocking serrations and Baer blued finish for $1830. Think I'm pulling the trigger on it Monday.

You hear about a lot of problems with Kimbers. I figure this is mostly because they sell more 1911s than damn near anybody else, but still. About the only production gun I'd consider at this point, having learned what these high-end handmade semi-custom guns can do, is something from Dan Wesson. I've turned into a pompous 1911 snob without ever having owned a 1911 yet.

As I said, I attribute the stories you hear of Kimber malfunctions largely to the fact that Kimber may well be the most popular 1911 maker in the world right now, and simply sells a metric fuckton of the things. They're good guns. The Marines wouldn't have picked 'em if they weren't.

But, I've got the opportunity to go needlessly high-end at the moment, and I reckon I might as well take it.
