non-GW metallic paints?

hi gang,

I've been reading pretty consistent reviews about the new GW metallics and how they're much "grainier" than the old colors. can anyone tell me how they compare with the metallic offerings from Vallejo, P3, etc? I've only had experience with GW paints and I'm trying to figure out if I should stock up on the old GW metallics while I still can or if there are good alternatives from other companies.

cheers,

v

non-GW metallic paints?

There are some side-by-sides on Orki's thread of the silver metallics, and even in the pics there is a noticeable difference. I haven't heard anything about the new golds though. As far as non GW stuff there is a lot of info about other methods. Here is a great blog post about some other methods.

http://atticwars40k.blogspot.com/2011/10/great-gold-rush-quest-for-best-gold.html

I'd like to try Vallejo liquid gold soon, but not sure if I want to spend any more money on metallics anytime soon.

Vallejo Game Color and Model Color are ok, on par with the old GW metallics.

Vallejo Model Air Metallics are much better, because they have a very fine metal pigment. Good coverage and shine, but the silvers are much better than the gold tones.

The best metallics I've ever used are the Vallejo Liquid Gold range. A bit of a hassle to work with, but worth it - unparalleled shine and coverage, but you need alcohol instead of water to clean your brushes and thin the paint. For more information you can read:

http://ik-painter.blogspot.de/2011/09/tools-of-trade-v-vallejos-liquid-gold.html

Cheers,

IK-Painter

First test showed Leadbelcher to be a bit better than Boltgun Metal: Thinner, same good coverage, maybe a tad darker. A friend of mine tested base colour gold and was also happy, only needing 2 layers instead of 3 with old paints

That said, I also use a metallic blue by Tamiya.
