Long time lurkers thoughts on gaming

Hello ladies and gents. I've been miniature wargaming since the early 90's. Since that time, I have left Warhammer 40k and recently returned with renewed interest and passion. My recent re-discovery of the 40k universe had me thinking this morning as I waited for my flight at the airport. I hadn't played 40k since very early 4th edition, and to be honest I couldn't remember why I ever left the hobby. As I sat there thinking, I pulled out my laptop and blogged a little on the topic. I am sure nothing I wrote is revolutionary, but I would be interested in hearing what people have to say.

So, for your reading pleasure http://focusfurysoulstones2.blogspot.com/2012/04/airport-ramblings-of-old-40k-gamer.html

Looking forward to seeing if others think along my lines on this topic, or if I'm maybe I'm just getting soft in my old age.

Best bet, in my opinion, would seem to be to look for a game store (or multiple) and see what games are played and make sure you like the group before jumping in. The answer for you might not be 40k, WHFB, etc... You might find a fun group that plays Blood Bowl regularly, or other games like FoW, HGB, Infinity, etc...

Long time lurkers thoughts on gaming

Wargames are no fun without people to play with. If you are dead set for a specific system which no one near you plays, then you basically have to become a 'gaming nomad' and plan your time to travel great distances for quality play. People who frequent tourneys are a good example as you can drive 2 hours, play 3-4 games and drive home and do that once every month and have a very rich gaming experience.

But if you are looking for casual and weeknight gaming you prettymuch are stuck with what your friends group or FLGS plays.

Balance wrote:Best bet, in my opinion, would seem to be to look for a game store (or multiple) and see what games are played and make sure you like the group before jumping in. Probably a side effect of my writing so damn early. I do play other games. People that know me would say that I play "all" other games. lol

What I was trying to get across was that I had thought for years that it had been the game of Warhammer 40k that had driven me away. Recently, I realized that it was the people I had been playing against that had done it. The game has its flaws, but none of them were what caused me to go elsewhere for my war gaming fix. I was lucky that when I started playing Warmachine, after 40k, that I found a group of people who were much friendlier to play with. Just to be clear, I am not saying there is anything wrong with playing competitively and wanting to win. Some very good, very competitive players are in my gmaing group. I am saying that winning, and being competitive don't have to come at the expense of your opponent having a lousy time. I like to think that gamers are all basically good people, just that we get so enthusiastic about our armies, and their performance and how cool they are that we forget that our opponent needs to have fun too. I think you can definitely make a losing game enjoyable for someone. I also think that if people thought of this while playing, we would have more people war gaming over all.
