NMM Sanguinary guard

New to the Forums so thought i'd try and make my first thread an interesting one, sorry if it's a bit too much yammering on.
So I hadn't painted in a few years, but some family friends kindly send me 40k most Christmas' and Birthdays.
Rummaging through these (Procrastinating seems it's closing in on exams) I decided Sanguinary guard looked good fun to paint, as i've always been far far more into the painting side.
Anyway not satisfied with just painting them i thought i may as well attempt NMM, as i have always adored the effect.

Anyway quite enough chitter chatter.

Top half

Bottom half

Axe

I was personally fairly pleased with the top half armour, Decided it was a more antique Gold, and luckily that was the desired look (decided post painted of course ha ha)
Bottom half i wasn't wholly chuffed about, and the axe i'm still undecided.
Not expecting miracles of course, it being a first try and all, just wanted to make sure i'm along the right tracks.

Thanks DPbell, might get some medium for my next model, never actually tried to use glazes or blending or any of that stuff.

Cheers ghost

Just a quick update... Not sure if that means it's more suited to the Blog section however? As i do intend on updating it a couple of more times until it's finished.

Anyhow Right arm done,

Taking an absolute age to do this model, though to be honest it's probably my favourite of any i've done.
Hoping it's just lack of practice and i'm not this ungodly slow when i go back to finish my nurgle squads.

Nrljm wrote:Looks great bud, may I ask your technique to painting it? What paints / mixes did you use?

Seems it was my first try i basically followed this example for where to where to put the highlights, so not the most creative of paint jobs ha ha.
As for for paints. All old citadel. For the armour going from Chaos black ---> Scorched brown --> Bestial brown --> Snakebite leather --> Bleached bone --> Skull white (extreme hightlights)
Mixing them up till i get to the next colour. Not sure about ratio water to paint, just enough so if i run my brush along tissue, the paint disperses out. I'd say at a guess about 3:1 water:paint, but total guess.
Not the Goldest Gold, so I'd probably put some Sunburst in if you wanted a brighter model.
I'd say that's a very inefficient way, and i'm probably completely painting over most of my steps.

The other problem is i'm using exactly the same colours for the wing bits, just obviously a lot more bleached bone and white. But worried that there isn't going to be enough contrast between the rest of the model.

Cheers IK, I'd say NMM isn't the hardest technique to actually do, and sort of pull off..ish. It's only because i copied another example that i could get the highlights where i wanted them and such, without that i'd be lost! Definitely something to give a go, completely takes me out my comfort zone seems i'm not one for highlighting too extremely.

Snrub wrote:Thats a pretty mad paintjob, looks wonderful. So from that perspective I'd say bloody time consuming.
However i'm an extremely slow, inefficient Painter.
And it's been almost 2 years since i've painted anything.
So i'm certainly not very practised.

So i'd probably say you could easily half the time... and do a better job with it.

Re:NMM Sanguinary guard

I imagine that being a slow painter has lended itself to your end result. You certainly cant get a NMM paintjob like that by rushing. For me personaly a paintjob to that standard would take aaaaaaaaaages to complete and i would need a hell of a lot more skill then what i currently possess.

As a whole i think you have nailed the nnm gold on the head.
Now as for the power ax. The blending is absoloutly superb, I really love the cold metallic feel it has. I think where you've gone wrong is with the white/grey line you have running down the middle. That stands out to much i feel. Maybe if it were a slight more subtle?

Just out of interest how many more sang guard do you have to paint?

Ha ha, i suppose patience is probably 90% of the battle.
I'd say patience and watering down paints are the most important pieces of advise i've had.

Thank you very much for the compliments, far too kind.
And yeh most sang guards go for a blue power blade kind of effect...firstly i tried that and failed. Then made up the excuse a more realistic blade added to the overall antique realisticish kind of effect
(I make up a lot of excuses while painting to save myself changing stuff ha ha)

I agree wholeheartedly with the line, too thick and a bit unrealistic. Not entirely sure how i can correct it at this stage, but i'll definitely give it a good go and post a picture afterwards.
Maybe just having the middle of the white line blended in more would help? not sure.

I have 5 in total. But only brought one with me to university as i knew it was going to take me forever. Can't imagine i'll actually get round to doing them for a very long time. As i don't collect blood angels. Was more just challenging my painting abilities now i'm not a youngblood (at 20 i haven't been for a while).

EDIT: Tried to fix up the axe a little but just created a bit of a mess, Not sure it's possible without completely re-doing it D: next time ey.
