Pretty basic questions

Hey so I only played my first 2 games today (both against myself....forever alone)

I used the quick start rules that they provide online and needed a few things clarified looking back at it.

1 - Do I need focus for my caster to fire his ranged weapon/get up after being knocked down
2 - If a jack's cortex is crippled does it just become basically useless, i.e. can't hold focus (which I take means can't use it ever, so no charging, hitting in combat, shooting, etc) and can only move 4" or so per move phase
3 - If something’s movement is crippled, does that mean it can’t enter combat, or just can’t make charge moves (if the enemy is within their 4" or so speed range, can they move normally into combat, or do you have to 'charge' in)
4 - Do you need to allocate focus so that you can use any attacks as you charge, or do you get the one attack which auto hits for free

Thanks a lot, probably more questions to follow over the next few weeks.

Re:Pretty basic questions

I have not read the quickstart rules, so things may be a little different from what you've read.

1a. You can make attacks without spending focus. All the weapons listed on the front of the card are separate attacks. These are your initial attacks.
Caveat is that unless the model has a special rule, it can only make ranged OR melee attacks, so no shooting then melee or vice-versa.
1b. Standing after knockdown requires sacrificing your move or action, except for Warcasters and Warjacks.
During the control phase, after you allocate Focus, if one of these has Focus, it can spend one to "shake off" the knockdown effect and are stood up then.
This allows them to activate normally later in the turn.

2. Crippled Cortex only prevents a model from being allocated Focus. This does not affect its attacks in any way.
Crippled Weapon systems, usually arms, sometimes head, cause you to roll only 1d6 for attack and damage rolls. You can still boost these to get back to 2d6 if you have focus.
Crippled Movement system give you a Def of 7 and cannot run or charge.
Crippled Arc Node prevents a model from channelling spells.

3. see above. Also, remember that you do not have to charge to make a melee attack. Advancing into melee will sometimes be your only option.

4. A warjack does not need to have focus to make attacks. And charge attacks do not auto hit.
A charge just gives +3 inches of movement, and a boosted damage roll on the first attack made on the charge target.
A warjack has a left and right weapon on its card. If it charges, it gets to make an attack with each weapon that has the melee weapon symbol.
Only one of these is the charge attack, which must make an attack roll of 2d6 plus MAT vs enemy DEF. You can spend focus to boost this roll to 3d6.
If the charge attack hits, the damage is automatically boosted, so you roll 3d6 plus the P+S of the weapon vs enemy ARM. This roll cannot be further boosted.
After the charge attack is resolved, you can make initial attacks with your remaining melee weapons.
If you make all your initial attacks, you can spend focus to make additional attacks with the weapon of your choice at a cost of one focus per attack.

Thanks a lot for all the corrections, I think the quick start rules can't be too far off the actual ones, else everyone would be too confused swapping over.

That makes a lot more sense now you've explained it. I was bound to make an ass load of errors in my first few games, so I'm glad it was against myself.

Thanks again.

Hey, no problem. Welcome to the game.
I've heard the QSR spray rules are different, and there are a couple simplifications but yeah...

Which forces are you trying out? That can help with more specific questions.

Pretty basic questions

At the moment I have run cygnar against menoth and khador (i controlled both forces). I've found the lancer to be brilliant against anything with a cortex, even if it gets crushed at the same time, and my ironclad has died hard both games, it gets used as a speed bump...poor thing. I can't think of any specific questions for those armies, but if I do you'll no doubt see them crop up here.

Aww, the Ironclad has been dying? That's depressing. I like to soften up targets with a fully focused Charger and then send the Ironclad in next turn to start smacking things around. That usually works for me.

Pretty basic questions

Another question, a weapon can only fire once, even if it has ROF 2, and you need to spend focus to fire the second shot, but cannot fire any more than the ROF?

Also, there is no 'striking back' like in warhammer, you have to wait until your turn to attack back?

Edit: I just found the Feats thing, but the other questions stand

Pretty basic questions

A gun can only shoot once as it's Initial attack, if it has RoF >1 you may pay one focus/Fury to shoot one more time as many times until you hit the RoF limit. Kaelyssa from Retribution of Scryah has a gun with RoF 3 so she can buy an extra ranged attack twice. Alternatively Dual Shot on Long Gunners allows them to make the second shot from thier RoF 2 guns.

There are some special abilities that let you shoot more than the RoF #. Reinholt the solo has Reload (*Action) and Montador has the Broadsides spell as the two examples that spring to mind.

The only standard attack-out-of-turn rule is free strikes, when things leave your own model's melee range. There are some models which have counterattack rules, but it is specific to those models, not a general thing.

ANd stuff.
