Warpaint for the win - a Savage Orc report on the Brawler Bash V in Raleigh, NC

In violation of all conventional internet wisdom, I took the following list to the Brawler Bash tournament in Raleigh this weekend.

Savage orc warboss - fencer's blades, glittering scales
Savage orc warboss - wyvern, battleaxe of the last waagh
Savage orc bigboss - BSB
Savage orc bigboss - boar, enchanted shield, spear
Savage orc shaman - shrunken head

57 Savage orc big'uns w/ 2hw
18 savage orcs w/ 2hw
18 savage orcs w/ bows (yes, bows)
19 savage orc boar boys w/ spears & shields

10 goblin spider riders w/ snaggla
1 arachnarock spider

What the hell kind of list is this you might ask? Between the total lack of magic defence (or offence), the absence of armor on any character, and the idiot with the battleaxe of the waagh, how do you expect to suceed at a large tournament?

I guess I didn't really, but I placed 2nd overall after going 4-1 none-the-less.

Actually, the event was awesome. 30something people showed up, and in an entire 5 game weekend, I didn't see one loud rules argument, or a single broken list. All this in a non-comped tournament, which I think speaks well of the Raleigh gaming community.

Highlights of my gaming weekend:
1. My big orc block defeating a combined charge by 30 zombies, 30 graveguard, 50 skeletons, 2 vampires and a wight king by a whopping 36 combat res in turn 2. It crumbled all 3 units and gave me the game in under an hour.
2. Watching a slaughtermaster purple sun himself and his unit of ironguts to death.
3. Watching my boarboys take a charge from a full unit of mournfang cavalry (and go on to beat them a few turns later) by passing a freakish number of 6+ ward saves.

Lowlights:
1. Savage orc archers in a building failing animosity, rolling a six, and charging out of the building into a full unit of maneaters, who beat them to a pulp.
2. Losing an arachnarock, 5 boarboys, and 3 orcs to a turn 1 purple sun.
3. Having my entire block of orcs destroyed in game 1 by the witch king of the dark elves.

Again, great tournament. Thanks to Eric and the Raleigh crew for a great weekend of gaming.

And remember, if you pass enough ward saves, even the most ridiculous army can win!

Dan

Oof, so many savages! Well done on the placing too, clearly the stuff of madness

wonkobaggins wrote:3. Having my entire block of orcs destroyed in game 1 by the witch king of the dark elves.

Is that your savagestar dying? I'm actually curious if you ever lost the deathstar, and if you did lose it, if you lost it only in your single defeat? Here in the NE - and much of the world judging by ETC comp - savages are one of those units, like chaos chosen, that are often capped at a maximum size. (Up here it's 28-30 max.)

- Salvage

Good call on the animosity - I thought that was the case, but I couldn't find the rule when it mattered. No big deal.

Yes, the giant block only died once, and that was the one game I lost. He killed my BSB and shaman with a few Mindrazor swings and wore the unit down over the next 2 turns with Blackguard, corsairs and a deep spearmen unit. Malekith contributed by soulstealing the unit a few times.

The tournament was uncomped, but I can see why some people would restrict the size of a savage block - with the shrunken head, it's pretty tough to break - 51 S5 attacks on the first round of combat.

Solid performance on the weekend Dan.

I only wish the vampire known as slaps McGee had actually pulled out his blade and attempted to kill at least one Orc before whiffing all over the place. Looking forward to getting you back up this way soon.

-J

I'll be back in as soon as I can - this place is like a vortex, and I can't imagine being away from Bragg for too long.

I had a great weekend, and I'm glad all of you showed up.

Maybe you should model that vampire with a whifflebat!

Dan
