Space Marine 2000 army

Hi Dakka,

We have a lot of different armies in the family, the oldest boy is a SM fan.

He has put together the following list - appreciate any comments!

Space marine army list
HQ
Captain Cato Sicarius
Chief Librarian Tigrius

Troops:
2 X10 man, tactical squads. 1 with lascannon, 1 with plasma cannon.
Both have plasma guns.
1 X10man, scout squad. 5 with sniper rifles. Whole squad with camo cloaks
Dedicated transports
2 Rhinos with extra armour, storm bolters, dozer blades.
1 drop pod with deathwind missile launcher and locater beacon.
Elites
1 x5 man, terminator squad with storm bolters and power fists (sergeant has power sword)
Heavy support
1 s8 man, devastator squad with multi melta, missile launcher, lascannon, plasma cannon.(sergeant has plasma pistol and chainsword) Other 3 have bolters.
Land raider Crusader with multi-melta.
Vindicator with storm bolter, siege shield ,extra armour.

Generally, he plays by running mech up then disembarking to assault.

Thoughts, preferably working within the models above (or limiting new purchases required) would be very helpful.

TIA

put tac squads in rhinos to make them survive and give them meltaguns and a miss lancher, plasma is only good for other space marines and you will need anti tank weapons

if you have some snipers make them all snipers and add sargent taloen with cloaks most annoying unit ever >:3

what is in the drop pod? and also no death wind missle lancher it will just kill its own units with the large blast

the terminators are meh make them assault with all thunderhammer storm shields

you have so many devastator weapons that it makes them not focused if they are in the drop pod give them all multi meltas if not then x2 missle lanchers and x2 lascannons also dont upgrade the sargent the sargent will never shoot because if he does not shoot 1 guy gets bs 5

your land raider crusider can hold 8 terminators get a redeemer or normal land raider crusaiders are just for the troop trandsport

vindicater will probably die turn 1 and they are most effective when used by blood angels so i would scrap this for something else

Chief Librarian Tigrius is just not that great. Cato can be ok.
Extra armour on the rhino isn't so important. Though on the raider it would be great.
Meltaguns are really important, combimeltas can also be good.
Shooty termies are not so brilliant but at least bring a CML with them.
Actually I wouldn't bring the deathwind as it doesn't fire when it lands.
Two vindicators will work better than one. The range is an issue though they are killy enough and they are very useful.

Pretty much agree completely with MFletch...

Tigurius is generally a waste and Cato 9 times out of 10 isn't worth the points cost either...On the bright side though, he can always just proxy them as a normal libby and / or a tooled-up captain.

There's nothing wrong with the Crusader and it generally is a much better performer than a single, "normal" land raider or Redeemer [albeit with a different (but actually focused) role]. If he wants to put the termies in the raider, they should probably be assault termies. One problem with the list though is that it looks like he wants to go with more of a mech-oriented list but at only 4 tanks (ignoring the drop pod), any army with decent melta is going to pop those quick.

I'm confused though, how is the drop pod being purchased in that list?

I'm also not a fan of Vindicator's at all. In the presented list it's even more of a target than normal.

What other models does he have access to (ignoring purchases)? Speeders, Pred's, more melta, more missiles, cyclone termies, assault termies and even Sternguard could all help bring the list together.

He has the Cato model but we can proxy for something else easy enough.

Fray wrote:
There's nothing wrong with the Crusader and it generally is a much better performer than a single, "normal" land raider or Redeemer [albeit with a different (but actually focused) role]. I don't think he has really decided what his preference is because generally he runs the mech up and dismounts. We've talked about that a couple of times, but he knows better . And, yep, they get popped quick.

I guess he needs to make a call before he buys any more models - I'll get him to search for mech army lists and see whether he likes them.

Also, thanks for the tips on the termies - I'll get him to check his codex and create assault termies instead. although, none of the other brothers can take them out as is. Any tips for them (nids, tau)

Fray wrote:
I'm confused though, how is the drop pod being purchased in that list?

he made a lookalike out of Lego . I told him he couldn't buy one until he had played with one! He also built a crusader look alike, which is where the crusader came from. The vindicator is a Tau devilfish.

Fray wrote:
I'm also not a fan of Vindicator's at all. He keeps finding that out.

Fray wrote:
What other models does he have access to (ignoring purchases)? He has a lot of spare guys, but not more mech - no speeders etc. I think this will help him a lot to decide what to buy next.

Thanks to all for the feedback.

Always a good decision to proxy things where possible before you go out and drop the cash on it. Better to find out an expensive model doesn't fit your style or perform to expectations while it's made of lego than to go spend $80 on it and then find out.

I was asking about the Drop Pod though because it didn't look "legal" as the two Tac squads could take the Rhinos and then nothing else listed could take the Pod...but nevermind that now as I had forgotten about the Dev squad

To respond to your questions though;

HQ:
Ignoring the special characters for now, a Librarian is a very popular and often effective choice as they're cheap, provide psychic defense and can be flexible depending on the powers chosen.

Captains are also a good choice as they can not only be tooled up a bit (some fun stuff is a combi-melta and a relic blade), unlock the command squad (some special characters do so as well, Cato included) and can also allow for a bike-centric army if he's mounted on a bike. Basically, he's a go-to for some flexibility.

Chaplains *can* be a decent choice as well however most people in my experience opt for the often more useful Librarian.

As for special characters, they should really be taken in order to really exploit (I don't mean exploit in the bad way) whatever respective perk they unlock and since they're all fairly expensive, you better be maxing that perk out!

Tigurius gives you what? 3 psychic abilities per turn and allows you to reroll reserve rolls. Obviously, the reserve part's only good if you're depending on them and the psychic part...well, you can get 2 vanilla Librarians for less than his cost and while that doesn't quite get you on par with him, it means an extra model to worry about and potentially more psychic coverage.

Cato's uses are also somewhat limited and given his points cost, it's usually better to spend them elsewhere. Don't get me wrong, giving a Tac squad counter-attack, infiltrate, scout, or tank hunters has surely won some games and most likely makes for some good stories, but remember that they're conferred to vanilla tac marines who while they *should* be a solid core for the marines (based on the fluff), they're almost always outperformed by every other option available to a marine player.

Some popular / good special characters are Shrike, Vulkan, Telion and Khan (my favourites being Shrike and Vulkan, personally) but there will always be someone that can make a case for any of the others. Proxy them and find out how they do or whether they (and their perks) fit the playstyle he enjoys most.

It sounds like he's mostly just getting a feel for things for the time being, and it's great that he's able to proxy things without someone being "that guy" but it also makes it a little challenging to give some specific advice without really knowing the type of army he wants to play. Building a "shooty" marine list is quite different from a CC one and there's also the decisions of playing a bike & speeder list, foot slogging or a mech list (among others).

Bottomline though, he needs to determine how he wants to play in my opinion, and that's best done through testing different lists. He very well might like the idea of a mech list but then when playing it, decide that he prefers to punch faces (which is kinda what it's sounding like).
