Starting Tyranids

Welcome to the Hive Mind!

This ist looks to be about 1400 points, 1500 if some upgrades are not listed.

Let's start with the Tyrant. T6 and a 3+ Save aren't worth much. I'd recommend ether one Tyrant Guard for a Cover Save or Armored Shell.

How are you running the Warriors? They are good for cheap Synapse and cracking heads in CC. Shooting is their weakness so play accordingly.

What is the Carnifex armed with? I'd arm him for Blast Damage as his Anti-Tank is this Codex is painfully under powered. CC is not very viable either as many units do it better.

Hormagaunts are fun for speed but getting them to do anything useful is tough. I'd run them naked to give cover saves to the infantry but watch how far they run forward. It's easy to rage bait them into a fight they can't win.

The Genestealers get costly with lots of upgrades. I would drop the Talons, the WS 6 will carry you.

I don't know what models you have available or funds at your disposal. Unfortunately I have to recommend the basics.

Trygons to bash face, Hive Guard for Anti-Tank. Every unit in the codex has only a singular purpose so lists will vary on your meta.

Starting Tyranids

I find the hive tyrant the most solid HQ choice, mainly because of how versitile he is, I have never been a big fan of primes. Make sure to give him the Hive Commander upgrade, will be very usefull for your genestealers.

Warriors, how did you plan on equiping these? you might want to bulk out the squad a bit more as they can be instant deathed by the mass strength 8+ weapons these days.

Carnifexs are normally seen to be to expensive, maybe a trygon would be the better option, You could try just giving him two sets of twin-linked devourers and put him in a mycetic spore.

I see that a tervigon makes a very usefull troops choice, but for that you have to have a squad of termagants, 60 hormagaunts may be a bit to much, if you can change half of them to termagants, or just proxy in the mean time.

Genestealers are great in my opinion, make two squads of 10 and with hive commander wacth them casuse panic in your oppenents backline.

At the end of the day, just try and get some games in and try out different things untill you find what works for you

edit: ninja'd

Re:Starting Tyranids

My Tyranid army is going to be a slow build to as I am doing it as a side project from my grey knights

I already recently purchased the new hive tyrant kit, but am yet to assemble him lol

My initial idea was to make a swamlord, but as most games here in NZ are about 1500 points, he is to expensive to take as an option

I love the look of the winged tyrant, but to me he just screams out to be shoot of the board turn one, so for that reason, I just take a walking tyrant, lash whip & bonesword, and scything talons, hive commander and armoured shell, I dont see the point in a gun as his stats are clearly suited for combat, but thats just my opinion.

After that you will need to look at getting some troops, some genestealers and termagants would be a good bet, that also means you can take a tervigon as troops which is cool.

Maybe a battleforce woould be a good next investment, plus the tyrant would make a good base for a starting army

Re:Starting Tyranids

Welcome to the Hive Mind.

Let's start with a quick review of your unit choices, and then I'll see about making some additional suggestions.

Hive Tyrant: Solid HQ choice. He's a little bit expensive in games of 1000 or less, but in higher point games his versatility is great.
I usually run him with either Lash Whip/Bonesword and one of the 2 big guns, or Lash Whip/Bonesword and 2 Twin Linked Devs. Almost always with Hive Commander, as I have a lot of units in reserve, though how you kit him out really depends on the rest of your army. Decide how you want the rest of your army to look first.
eg. If you run a squad of gargoyles, give the tyrant wings, and make him a close combat specialist. Use the gargoyles to screeen him as he makes his way up the field.

Warriors: Not as good as they initially look on paper as they're susceptible to ID, though if you run a squad of them along with a Prime then they have their uses. Lots of load out options, but nothing that solves the only problem they have (Dying before they get into combat). A fun casual unit, but I'd never run them against a competitive army.

Carnifex: I've never run one in 5th Ed. 2 sets of Twin Linkes Dev's is how most people run them these days, though I think they're a tad too expensive for what you get.

Tervigon: One of the best units the codex has to offer. Take a small squad of Termagants, and run this beast as a Troop. Then you've got T6, W6 Monster that can claim objectives and spawn yet more troops. Also, Catalyst is a brilliant psychic power, and even Onslaught can be used well in conjunction with Hive Guard.

Hormagaunts: Sadly, I like their models alot more than the Termagants, and I'd love to swarm 60 of them, but they're not very good. If you want them to be good in CC against anything bigger than a simple guardsman, then they need Toxin Sacs or Adrenal Glands. This however makes them too expensive, and they'll suffer from the same problem as the warriors (If your opponent has any amount of guns at all, they will die before getting into combat)
Take Termagants instead. With dev's, they'll unleash beastly amount of firepower, or if you just take them with Fleshborer's, they're cheap as chips and for each squad you get, you can run another Tervigon as a troop.

Genestealers: One of my favorite units in the Codex, and they usually occupy most of my troop choice. Like all other close combat units we've discussed, their problem is dying before engaging. However, they have the benefit of outflanking and infiltrating, so if you can get them in on the right side of the board, then you don't have to worry about making a long march into enemy fire.
Give them Toxin Sacs, or a Broodlord, or both at your leisure, and they'll eat through any infantry, and with their rending claws they're pretty good tank hunters too.

I notice that you haven't got any elite slots filled, and in the Tyranid codex, you absolutely need to fill all 3 of those slots. You'll need some ranged Anti-Tank, and this is the only place to get it. Either Hive Guard or Zoanthropes (Hive Guard are always better for their points cost, but the choice is yours).
I'd advise you run at least 2 squads of 2 Hive Guard. Maybe 3 for a more transport heavy opponent.

Hope that helps. Sorry to ramble, haha.
