The former sounds more appropriate, since 979.M41 is only like 20 years prior to the current in-game year in most of the current fluff. If that were the case, the vast majority of the Imperium, regardless of who they are, would have never heard of the Tau.

I would agree with this as well. From the Tau's point of view Farsight fought in the Damocles crusade and reclaimed worlds in the wake of the imperial withdrawal from tau space, just before he broke away from the empire. Damocles Gulf crusade was definitely in the 740s. A truce was agreed so that each side could prepare for hive fleet Behemoth.
There is a crusade against the Tau in 999 (current timeline I guess). As far as I've read, the Imperials scored a big victory against the Ork forces on the main world, but the entire region is still infested with Orks and the troops still cought up in lengthy and bloody "mop-up" operations.

Of course it's possible that command simply thinks they don't need as many troops anymore and allows some units to be relocated to other warzones. As cadbren mentioned, the distance may seem a bit vast for a reasonable deployment, though. Then again, I suppose there are ways to explain/excuse it (-> clerical error? ).

No idea about whether or not the Imperium actually did send out a new Crusade that year tho. Could always just make one up. Keep in mind that this setting does not have much in terms of canon and consistency. At least according to the Ork codex, the third war is ongoing, interrupted only by volcanic eruptions; Ghazghkull, however, having grown bored with one little world, has departed (with Yarrick in pursuit). You may be thinking of the second (the "original") war for Armageddon, which ended in Imperial victory followed by decades of mopping-up.

Edit: So far as the Damocles Gulf Crusade goes, the earlier dates (741.M41 - 745.M41) must be the correct ones, in order for its conclusion to culminate with the arrival of the first Tyranid hive fleet. Probably a mixture of both ... it's been a few months since I last read the material on it. Well, at least I didn't err when saying it's still "on".

Most likely this.

Codex Tyranids and the hivefleet gorgon in the 900's of M41 has Cadians arriving a "150 years late" and this would fit with the 740's as best guess.

For Administratum recording purposes though they divide the standard year up into 1000 parts, each part being about 8 hours and 45 minutes long. This is recorded as a three digit number from 000-999. 000 being anytime between 12am and 8:45am on January 1st and 999 being anytime between 3:15pm and 12am December 31st.

Another thing to understand is that the current era of 40K is the 41st millenium, written M41, as the link says, our current era is M3 (the third millenium which is from the year 2001-3000).

The last date of 40K will be 999 999 M41 which is the last 8 hours and 45 minutes of December 31st, in the year 40,999.
