Look at the base like this - if you were to draw a picture that your very proud of it and it looked awesome would you put it in a frame that you just had laying around? Me no,I take the picture to a framing shop and get it done professionally, have it matted in a specific color or way to bring out certain tones or mood to the picture.

Just like frames for a picture a base is just important to set a mood feeling or theme. One last thing - and just a gripe is all that might help you to bring out colors in the model better. When you take a pic of the model try not to take it on your paint pallets because all those other colors clash with the model, distract, and can even wash out the tones if they underlay the model colors ie green model part on green paint on paper. Just grab a box paint it black or use a solid black or white t shirt etc.
