For The Emperaugh!

Hey, I've been playing Warhammer 40k since about December after my friend started throwing the fluff around and got me addicted to the Imperial Guard.

I don't have a hell of a lot:
Lord Commisar

3 Infantry Squads

Sentienal that unfortunately I neglected to dry-fit, so it's got this massive gap in the front (the weapons stumped me until I figured that they were not meant to really shift around)

One Deathstrike Missile Launcher awaiting a Deathstrike Missile (so lazy, and I'm not sure it'll fit: I was shaving off a stub on one of the rests and I nipped the bottom so it was tough to seat in the launcher housing properly)

And one unstarted Chimera that sacrificed its Tank Commander Bolt Pistol to my 3rd Infantry Sergeant.

However, with any luck in the next sixteen days I may be the proud owner of Imperial Guard, Space Marines and Sisters of Battle. I liked the 'Marines because, well, they didn't have such a bad habit of dying on me like my pathetic Guardsmen do. And Sisters of Battle? Holy hell they are awesome. Might have been cut to ribbons in the latest edition, or so my friend says, but when your primary opponent is an overconfident and younger kid who plays whatever army my friend plays- for reasons we can only guess at- all it takes is come creative tactics to fix your army. And the fact we typically play 1500-2000 points each doesn't hurt. (Of course, EVERYTHING is subbed in, and vehicles are elusive when you have two Guardsmen playing on a team things get packed. Especially when one of those Guardsmen players is a little too formation-happy for his own good.

That would be me. I swear I have OCD Symmetry. Some lists I've seen on DakkaDakka just makes me cringe simply because some squads have no symmetric mates, although clearly opposite ones are fine. (I imagine one in front of the other rather than a line of men projecting a symmetric arc of death.)

But as I work with the SoB I'm getting used to mixing it up, although I still can't quite give my squads a Heavy Weapon and a Special Weapon because I'm so concerned with maximum attack abilities per turn. (Heavy Bolter and Meltagun especially irks me, and Multi-Melta I have only JUST started to throw in a Special or Combi-Weapon in.)

I dunno, it just seems weird. Also on that note my Soulstorm games (I play SS Legions Mod) take as long as the RTS' of old (namely, epic Giant Map Age of Empires I and II games; I had one against my dad when I was like 8 when I was in love with footslogging soldiers and frowned on archers, dooming me to failure every game for six years.) because I dislike loosing units so I want to fight with more. Then I'm weary of how hard it is to micro-manage a cluster so I add more to ensure that if I loose one squad I have eight other copies to fill in the gap. And on SS Legions, that's a lot of Guardsmen. (And a lot of infantry death with the Mortar Squads)

Basically I'm more of a friendly player, and my age-old insistence on team games because of my nature as an accidental steamroller (want to take minimal firepower losses, ergo has massive amounts of units to absorb massive amounts of losses; also I like old school, three hour games not fast-paced twenty minute continual zerg rushes. (Ironic because that''s exactly how I play Campaign: I rush for my Hellhounds. Four of these will destroy everything, and they just do not die!)

Finally, I wish GW would sell some more models with Inferno Pistols and Braziers of Holy Fire. I'm not good at all with sculpting (especially now that I have muscular tendonitis) and I lack the funds to go on buying sprees to get parts, although that would open up interesting kitbashing options. (The only one I've done is sort of a lame Guardsmen with a helmet for a head that was nuts to get to stick, a Power Fist and a right arm with a holstered knife but no hand. Now I mainly use him as a sub-in for Marbo if pick him because he's suitably unique.)

Anywho, there are two cats- a mother and her daughter- to get settled in and measures to take that will invariably gravitate the cats towards thing I didn't think of.

For The Emperaugh!

Dr. Temujin wrote:Welcome to Dakka! Must have been interesting to simply dive in like that. Hope you don't find the prices too appalling, and that this forum helps you out in whatever way possible.

Actually I'm half an hour away from J&J Superstore, which almost always has Warhammer stuff on for sale.

Wouldn't find the prices that bad if it were easier to get what you needed without having to buy a zillion boxes. Please, tell me GW, how am I to gather Inferno Pistols when the only model I've seen to even have one is a Grey Knight Inquisitor? What if I want all of my Veteran Characters to have Inferno Pistols? Cripes...

Only other thing I can think of off the top of my head is the Battle Sisters. 20 for three? Yes, that makes sense if you go for minimal (1 Vet and 9 Sisters) but if you want one big squad you have one extra. From a shallow point of view I'd say boxes of six or even nine, giving an easy 18, room for a Veteran and a Heavy/Special weapon without going overboard. From a more mathematical point of view, I could go with 21. That would give me two smaller squads, or even one squad of some size and extras to make a Retributor Squad or something. (Good on the Storm Troopers so long as generic Cadians suffice for now.)

Actually, one more thing, though not price-related. I noticed a few of the models come with 'randomized' models, and some of them don't even show all the allegedly available models. One of the Marines says it has 4, but only shows one! (I think it was in the Dark Angels, but I'm not sure.)

And I heard of a price increase, which ought to be fun... Still, one I find myself a bloody job I can afford a Baneblade every nine hours (Oh the joy of Ontario. High minimum wage, first roughly 10k tax-free, doubly so if you're a student. Makes my conservative staring 1500pt Marine army's $600+ cost a heck of a lot easier to get. Now just to open one of these fancy high interest savings accounts, waits five years to stack up the allowed deposits and than max it out. Even if these interest rates stay low and I get stuck with 2%, 10k's interest nets me like two free Baneblades a year from J&Js. That counts for something.)

drunkorc wrote:I.G. are a really good army if used right.

Especially if your usual ally picks Death Korps and loads up on Thudd Guns. When you play with local people, one guy going Death Korps with almost purely artillery seems to virtually guarantee victory, and equally, it practically guarantees your opponent will use tactics to minimize that artillery's abilities, giving you a good chance at learning how to counter the counter!
Sure, it may seem a little unfair to almost always be fighting an artillery-spamming Korps and another IG player who mostly plays interference, but that combo does actually benefit others who are ready and willing to keep the fight going and learn from it. (The only bad thing is when you're up against someone who lost twice to you and instantly resigns themselves to defeat, as they usually play poorly either as a result of this, or just to spite you. Worse still is when they quite the moment they feel they're routed, not for one moment considering that there may be a way out of it. And finally, worse is redefined when the same person refuses to listen to advice on how to remedy the situation from their opponent who knows exactly what they are fearing the most yet still spills the beans in order to keep the game going, and thus, fun. It just irks me when people bug out when they've still got the ability to put up one hell of a fight- if you've got like three units left on the table and nothing in Reserves, sure, I can accept someone resigning with that so long as it's quite evident that they stand no chance, or they're new. I did that myself once, but that was because it was nearly 2AM and I had no more Troops left on the board- it was technically a draw at any rate, as it's somewhat tough to capture a point when all of your own Troops have been sitting on their thumbs in the corner the entire game, and your Deathwing/Ravenwing assault has turned on its head. I trapped two squads of Terminators and a Chaplain in close combat with a suicidal CCS squad and an Ogryn unit. And that Chaplain-Ogryn fight was hilarious. I got almost a 60% hit/wound rate and the Chaplain failed just one Armour Save in four turns. On the other hand, the Chaplain was too busy laughing his helmet off to actually land a hit on these brutes, until he finally had to stop for breath- that was when he took nine Ogryn fists in the face and finally died. The Terminators fared little better, my Guardsmen of course failing to do anything with butter knives and the Terminators too busy just standing there, staring at these idiots who are doing more harm to themselves. Same deal with Termie Squad #1 as the Chaplain; Termies were too busy chatting to do anything and finally my Lord Commissar got his slow butt over there and opened up a can of Power Fist. The second Squad wiped the floor with my utterly useless Carapace armour and assorted Guardsmen organs, and blew through two squads of infantry before they realised that I was just sending these hapless sods in so my other Ogryn units could close in. It was quite hilarious with 20 Ogryns hosing down a Terminator Squad caught flat-footed. The two that managed to survive were given the honour of being squashed to death by hulking, sweaty fists. Then the bikes came, churned up my remaining two PCS and IS units and flew smack into a Hydra. The game before my friend outflanked his Bikes and multi-assaulted my pair of Hydras, but this time the Hydras got their revenge for a change. Two turns, plenty of bullets and another Terminator rush later, no more bikes, no more Hydras, no more troops. I had nothing but three Ogryn squads and a Lord Commissar with one Wound left. Against about eight Terminators and four shining squads of idle Marines. I probably could have tried for a table-clearing victory, but the odds of surviving 40 odd Bolter rounds was low.)

On that note, my first game was interesting. I love tanks, my friends all agreed to do away with the mandatory HQ and 2 Troops to lighten the load for time considerations and lo and behold I end up with 9 Leman Russ Battle Tanks, a Hellhound and two Infantry Squads. First turn, first shot actually, and I blow a Land Raider to smithereens. Next shot nicks a Valkyrie, and the ensuing barrage of Lascannons blow that to pieces. We never did finish that, but 3 turns in my friend (this was 2v2 btw) and his friend were having a massive Hero Orgy featuring a pair of Abaddons (we tend to eschew the no copy heroes from time to time) and a pair of Lord of Macraggs, complete with a brilliant cast of extras in the form of forty Marines on both sides and who knows what else.

Anywho, rantrantrant I'll sheaddup now
