Help a newbie with his Orky army

[cut and pasted from previous threads, thanks fer yer patience!] I recently came into the extended minis collections of several friends who no longer feel they have appropriate garage space for their goodies (read: they got married/have young kids). Some of this stuff hasn’t been looked at in ages (I think one of them was explaining to me he last played second edition!), and a fair bit is quite nicely painted, and the rest I can muddle through.

But I’ve never played. I’m looking to get ahold of the 5th edition rules (there’s a new edition coming out soon, right? That’s probably good for me!) and codexes. I just signed up here today, and I turn to you, experienced 40K players, for help. I should add that I’ll be playing casual games with friends, and that we’re not WYSIWYG type guys. I can imagine proxying a little here and there, but I won’t be using the hellhound as a squad of catachan jungle dudes, for example.

And finally this is my rather lean Ork army. Again, any good beginner Orky threads out there would be good help. Like those other threads I just posted, I’d love to hear from you about what you’ve had fun with Ork-wise, and what you might suggest I consider to beef up this rather anemic army o’ greenskins.

About 70 Ork grunts, all from the Rogue Trader days. Various poses, weapon kits, etc. but they all look rather basic troop like to me.
2 wartraks
2 warbuggies

The stormboyz always looked fun to me. Are they any good?
I also quite like the killer can models, and could in a pinch proxy one for an orky dreadnaught.
What really obvious must-haves am I missing?

Thanks!

Help a newbie with his Orky army

Welcome to Dakka, and welcome to Orks.....the best army to play....cuz Orks is made to fight an win! Read the tacticas, they'll give you a wealth of information.

Well, you need an HQ or two. Everyone needs a warboss...and the one from Assault on Black Reach(AOBR) is fantastic and cheap. The most competitive choice is the Big Mek w/KFF. For 85 points, he gives vehicles in 6" a 4+, and infantry a 5+ cover. Best use of points.

After that, you really need to decide on what kind of list you're going to field. The 3 competitive styles are Green Tide, Kan Wall(a variation that's been downgraded in effectiveness due to a recent Codex), and mechanized(of which the Battlewagon Rush is the strongest). Of these three, the mechanized/BW Rush is the strongest/most competitive.

Welcome.
Get yourself a rulebook and ork codex, swat up and try and make a list. Give us some points ranges money limits and I or we could make something of it.

As it stands I could recommend the best apoc army but it costs £10,000 for example.

The best I can do for now is just explain a few of the bog standard tactics.

It seems with what you've got a green tide list wouldn't be amiss. This implies that you go all foot with no vehicles so that you have so many orks that they could never kill them all off before they smash into them and give them a good krumpin

The other ones are Kan walls, which involved getting a KFF and some Kanz with Rokkit Launchas and making a wall infront of your Orks, the benefit is that everything gets a 4+SV and is suprisingly durable, it will get you wins but it's just stock overplayed and quite boring.

Battlewagon rush is a good one also, as many Batttlewagons with Deffrollas and some other things (You generally want them cheap) speed across the board under the KFF, they hit the enemy pile out and kill everything.

Trukk spam isn't that great but it's fun and can do wonders. Just get loads of trukks the KFF again and speed towards the enemy.

I recommend green tide if you have 70 Orks.
