Fineliners For Highlighting & Detailing

Yo.

So, I'm sure I've read about people using fineliners to pick out details and highlight certain parts of a model.
I invested in some this afternoon to try it out and for the most part it's more like applying a thin line of shading, though that's because the colours I bought are all darker variants.

I'm using Staedtler triplus fineliners with a 0.3mm point and am having a hit and miss experience thus far but I'm quite positive I can make good of it.

I'm just wondering if anyone else has experience with this sort of thing?

I too tried these, but for doing symbols and signs on shoulder pads etc, only problem i found was the pens didn't work that well over paint, seems they only really liked paper.
