Feral Ork army idea

I was thinking about making a feral ork army out of fantasy savage ork models. I was thinking, instead of having bow, etc as counts-as shootas and sluggas, they could use their "collective psychic might" and shoot psychic bullets from their fingers. AKA, all the boys would have a CC weapon in one hand, and the other hand would be in the shape of a gun (so thumb up, pointer finger out, rest of hand clenched in fist) and they would believe that they are shooting the enemy, so they do. Does this make sense, and would you play an army like this?

That would be a really neat army wide conversion, and I would personally have no problem playing it.

The only problem I do see coming up, though, is one of modeling. You are talking about a lot of work to get the entire army pointing their fingers, so you might want to just go with bows.

-cgmckenzie

Feral Ork army idea

JohnnoM wrote:I was thinking about making a feral ork army out of fantasy savage ork models. Does this make sense, and would you play an army like this?

I see one gameplay/rules problem and two fluff problems.

First, if the orks are just pointing and going 'kapow!", there's no real way to tell a slugga from a shoota, or a rokkit launcha, or a burna, or whatever. Even if sluggas have a one-armed shooting stance and shootas have a two-handed shooting stance, you still don't know who has a shoota vs a big shoota, etc. I would feel very unhappy playing against this unless everyone was armed with just slugga or shoota. If you give other models other real weapons, then it doesn't make any sense (they can have burnas, but not sluggas?) and if you just use slugga and shoota, you are really handicapping yourself a good bit.

Second, I think you (and, to be fair, a LOT of people) are overselling ork psychic powers. Individual orks don't manifest enough psychic energy to produce the effects of shooting weapons. It takes weirdboys to manifest that level of psychic power. Ork guns might work despite being poorly rifled, or badly maintained, or loaded with too much ammo, but the ambient orky psychic field just doesn't produce enough power for every single ork to run around without a gun, but still be able to shoot someone. Imperial technologists have studied ork tech and don't see how it could work properly, but that doesn't imply that they don't have any need for tech at all. If this was the case, why would orks ever start making and lugging around weapons? It's got to be dead boring to make and load guns, compared to just running around shouting "Dakka! Dakka! You is all dead!"

Third, feral orks are feral, but not stupid. They tend to arise in areas that have been cleansed of orks, but there is probably a lot of ork detritus around. They still have all the technical knowledge inside the ork DNA, so their feral meks could put back together busted ork weapons and the like. They can even make guns, but, being feral, don't have a strong orkish infrastructure, so lack large factories, etc. If orks arise in a feral state, and don't have any guns (and since they don't have any guns, also don't have bikes, trukks, dreads, etc), they're just NOT going to be much threat to an opposing army. Either the feral orks are smart enough to wait until they get their hands on some guns (either making them, repairing them, or even seizing enemy guns) or they are going to attack an army armed with bows and spears, and get slaughtered.

What I am trying to say with that last point is (barring another Feral Ork army list with squigs, squiggoths, etc), any Feral Ork army that is a real military threat (and thus, something that you would field as a 40K army) is going to be one that has some sort of guns. They might have a lot of busted up ork guns. They might have a lot of crap human weapons (like the old necromunda weapons sprues). They might have some beat up Space Marine boltguns. They will have guns, however. Similarly, in the fluff, it is possible that you might have a large number of non-combatants in an Imperial Guard army (cooks, medics, camp wives, mechanics), but still not see an army of them on the tabletop. Space Marines take off their power armor in the fluff as well, but you don't field an unarmored Space Marine force.

The fluff objections are just that, fluff. I wouldn't hold those against you when playing across the table. I wouldn't rate the army highly in any sort of 'Best Army' voting, but I wouldn't refuse to play it. The rules objection, on the other hand, would really give me pause. Orks have a ton of guys on the board already. Having to guess how each ork was armed based on his ''firing stance" is just a little much. 40K isn't strictly WYSIWYG, but I think it would be really confusing.

Feral Ork army idea

What if I painted each hand a colour for each weapon?

e.g. Leave it bare for sluggas, blue for shootas, red for burnas, black for rokkits etc. And having the two handed gun wielders pointing with both hands?
