New player Vampire counts

Being a new fantasy book there is nothing that is really considered 'good' or 'bad' everything is balance really well.

You probably wont need all those characters in the same game, wright kings make good BSBs and combat heroes (T4 and 3W on a 85 point hero is awesome). I always take a pair of level 1 necros for that extra channel and signature spell but making one a lvl 4 necromancer lord works well with a cheap vamp lord or no vamp lord in a magic heavy army. Vampires can be kitted out for pretty much anything you could possibly want.

2 big units of skeletons, 1 huge zombie unit and (depending on your preference) a single big or 2 small, expendable ghoul units is a solid core.

The hexwraiths and spirit hosts are both probably better off run as 2 units of 5 as hexwraiths are designed to harass not win combat and spirit hosts will loos 3 attacks each in the second rank.
It may well be impossible to overstate just how awesome a unit of 40 grave guard with a wright king and the banner of the burrows with a nearby caster will be. Again everything is nicely balanced so it isn't your only hammer choice but it is defiantly a good one.

Your core comes in at 980 points before command units, 40 grave guard, command and the banner is a bit over 500 points, how you put together your Lords and Heroes depends entirely on whether you want a combat or magic army. For a magic heavy you can take a vamp lord who will be a strong caster but still able to stand in the front ranks of those grave guard for like, 450-550 points or you could take a necromancer lord who will cost you more like 250-320 max. How much you want to spend on heroes really just depends on how many points you want to play and how many of those spirit hosts and hexwraiths you want. If you were to only take say 3 spirits and 5 hexwraiths you could probably get quite a lot of heroes in at around 2500, or take a lot more spirit hosts and only a couple of heroes.

Everything you have there should make up a nice 3000 point list fairly easily depending on what you do with your lords/heroes but we need to know if you want to go magic or combat before really getting into that.

Re:New player Vampire counts

Hey, just a suggestion; get some Black Knights and corpse cart, and definitely more skeletons/crypt ghouls/zombies. When you cast spells with the ability to expand units beyond their starting size; and you need a couple dozen extra models. Vampire Counts like to win games with more units then they started with.

New player Vampire counts

Yea you will need at least 20 more zombies and if your going magic probably 40 as well as 20 more skeletons just so you have more to put down when you raise them.

A corpse cart is great in a magic heavy list as you signature spell (the bring back troops one) is an AoE and any spell (including that) that hits the corpse cart will trigger it's ability which gives every unit within 6" ASF. Black knights are good but I wouldn't bother simply because you have the models to put down a good 3000 point army and (with the possible exception of the corpse cart) you don't need to buy anything else.

Magic heavy I personally like a lvl4 vamp lord with master of the black arts and the black periapt, that allows you to re roll one of the dice from winds of magic and save 2 dispel dice to use as power dice next turn (you can save power but in a magic heavy list why would you?). That creates a very nice safety net so your army doesn't begin falling apart thanks to a single bad roll on winds of magic. Having said that it's 534 points once you give him stuff to keep him alive.
Alternatively you can go a necromancer lord (lvl4) still take the black periapt, a 4+ ward save and master of the dead (you need this on your highest lvl necromancer in a magic list) for only about 315 points, leaving you enough room to put in a lvl 1 vamp lord that will shred things in combat.

You want to put down both those necromancers whatever way you go, if a vamp lord caster I like a lvl 2 with master of the dead and then a naked lvl 1, if its a necro lord your using I'd probably just go a naked lvl 1, if you don't have master of the dead on it then a necromancers job is to stand there and channel then cast invocation until he dies.

At that point you'd be at (or past) 3000 if you take all the spirit hosts, if you drop them down you can free up more room for wright kings and vampire heroes.
Vampires can be tooled up to do pretty much anything you want. Red fury (each kill generates another attack), quickblood (always strike first) and a combination of the terror/lower LD/lower LD more are all good vampire powers, avoid master strike (heroic killing blow, but you only get *1*) or dread knight (+2WS but must challenge) as your vampires have to be killing enough of the enemy unit to win combat rez thanks to the stupid number of wounds they did, directing all your attacks at 1 guy is overkill and a waste.
Wright kings make good BSBs thanks to high T and W or cheap (compared to a vamp) killy heroes that, with the +1 to hit from the banner in the grave guard unit, can hit very hard.
