Dropzone Commander - one of the most anticipated games of 2012 launched on the 8th June, and promises to be a superb game of mass sci-fi battles with dropships, tanks and troops in opposing forces with a great ruleset. You can see the full details of the game and miniatures on the Hawk Wargames website at http://www.hawkwargames.com

All the miniatures are resin cast using state of the art equipment producing models with exceptional detail and as such lend themselves to a wide variety of paint schemes. Certainly when you have terrific miniatures you want the best case system available to carry them in, and so KR was the natural choice due to our “soft foam for miniatures, hard cases for soft foam” philosophy, which ensures full protection for any fragile parts, and very importantly, does not rub the paint off your models.

KR worked closely with Hawk Wargames to ensure that the custom trays designed for each of the 4 factions will carry your army with the best protection possible for transport. The final versions of these trays will be added to the KR site during the next few weeks. As too will the tray sets for various army configurations, including of course the tray sets for the premium army deals which are on offer from Hawk Wargames and include a KR Multicase and trays for that army set up.

Dropzone Commander trays can be purchased individually or in cases bearing the Dropzone Commander logo.

The final trays and sets for each of the factions will be added over the next few weeks, and will be available for pre-orders from the start of July with shipping from 23rd July to coincide with the shipping date of the miniatures themselves from Hawk Wargames.

Whether you need a small force or one of the large army deals, or even their mega deal, there is a case to suit your needs. You can choose from any of the wide range of KR Multicases and match a case to your army size – only the KR modular case and tray system give you this versatility. Particularly interested in what space there will be after a Mega army goes in one... thinking of getting the Shaltari mega deal, plus 2 extra of the walkers, and wondering if there'll be spots for them.

It makes sense, since the deal comes with 4 walkers and 2 large drop ships, but the large drop ships can carry 3 walkers apiece... makes sense to add 2 more!

There will be spare room in there for expansion, though the Mega army will fill most of the standard case.

Flight stands can be double ended into an I-I shape, so you will need two I-I's. Even if you have a policy of never double filling a compartment (and I cant really see why for bases, you could dovetail the smaller dropships up close to each other and fit a lot more holes on that piece.

I still wonder if you can tighten it up a little and get more in. Puting items in on 'obliques' looks wasteful frankly.

In addition one of the advantages of this game is that it uses very resilient models, So they amount of 'clearance' you need to secure the models can be cut a bit. Were they metal or regular rein that would be unwise but with 'rubbery' resin you only really need the trays to contain rather than shield.

However it works out, I am pleased that you listened and had a look-see.

The models themselves are made from a resilient resin, but it is also necessary to ensure there is sufficient soft foam to protect the paint finish of the models, something that only the soft foam from KR can provide as the KR system is designed for soft foam in hard cases.

No problem with looking at your suggestions, it is always worth trying out options and incorporating customers thoughts whenever possible as it all helps make the best trays for the army.

I work closely with David at Hawk Wargames to ensure the tray layouts match the ruleset and the army deals (as well as likely expansions as mentioned above), and have used a full set of the final models for designing the compartments and trays.

Correct me if necessary. Allowing for the price charged being the same (£30 each rather than £20 for the starter) the large case and the mega case are the same, yes? The PHR mega army doesn't include Menchit Walkers. If the foam can fit two more walkers in (and I have no idea how big they are) it'll be great.

I modified your original photograph as per the attachment. The tray on the left is almost certainly possible within your constraints, and would add an additional tank capacity to the tray. The one on the right is a little more doubtful to me (distance from the dropships to the stand seems small and the perspective makes it tough to measure) but it would add two tanks to the tray.

Would love to hear your feedback.

The trays listed are all doubled up PH4+PH6 for example, yet the trays listed for the deal are single such as one PH4 , 2x PH5. It hard to get a clear breakdown.

If I add up all the subcomponents it doesn't add up. Your case appears to only allow for three Strike Dropships, yet the mega deal has four.

by what I can read this:

means:

2x heavy dropships
4x medium dropships or fighters
2x fighters
3x strike dropships
13x IFV/MLRS
20x Walkers
8x Scout walkers
12x troops stands
1x cards plus 'accessories'

Now from your earlier comments you want it to be efficient and expansion frindly.
You have insufficient room for the 4 Tritons provided
You provide 13 'tank' slots, nothing like enough infantry stand space for them. Unless you are expecting massed sales of MLRS.
No heavy and medium dropship beyond the set contents. Capacity to airlift 20 units and a total of 33 provided. This excludes scout walkers, of which you have more that can be covered by the strike dropships (assuming none of those are infantry carriers.

So your set cannot actually fit a mega set for PHR, allowing for the info given, and expands on in that you can have 6 walkers, 7 tracked vehicles and 4 scout walkers, yet no expansion room for dropships fighters or infantry.

Here are the lists for the Starter, large and Mega army deals -

Re your other thoughts on how much each can ship can carry and the case capacity - bear in mind that the tray selection for the army deals is based around the likely vehicle/troop quantities using the ruleset . Certainly higher quantities and variations are possible, hence the flexibility of the tray system to cater for all those needs,

I would really like to know before ordering my models, as I'd like them all to fit in the case!

One thing I'm confused about- I was planning to order the starter army with case, and then add all the models that are in the mega army, as I'd rather order from someone in the US. Are you saying the trays in the starter army case are different than the large/mega? The starter army case is half the size of the case for the mega army, and is aimed at the likely models that would be expanded to for a small game. If you are planning to add the mega army then the easiest option is to buy the larger case (possibly even with the mega army), or one of the larger cases with a tray set for the mega army, or you can choose exactly which tray you will need if for example you then decide to vary your army list once you start playing the game. Once the trays are all done, I will be adding the range of KR Multicases to the Dropzone Commander listings.

If you purchased just 3 additional trays :

PH1+PH1
PH4+PH4
PH5+PH5

That will give you the same trays as in the Mega army set,

That would cover extra tranport for up to ten more ground units, something which the current box will cover Trouble now is transporting the extra tray Its not enough to warrant an extra case. However by the time UCM trays are worked out I will likly be wanting something similar there. I could fill the rest with terrain I suppose.


The case, as is, will allow for 12 dropships and enough extra space to have a choice of what to load them up with. Keeping parity of transport against ground vehicle would take that choice away. But 33 ground models (plus 8 scout walkers) against a capacity of 20 is a bit much IMHO. it would be good to squeeze an extra Neptune in there instead to keep options open.

I don't like the card cases (nothing specific, I just don't like them), EDIT: so I would prefer to use some other type of case.
How can I know what fit in what ?
Don't take it wrong, but the description of what is an KRU and how many KRU fit in what are somewhat lacking, and the only thing I have seen that answer my question (the tray selector) does not include the DropZone trays.
There seems to be many formats of tray. Which one are the DropZone trays ?

What does the PH30 looks like ?

RiTides - Yes Warstore / Miniature Market can stock them either direct from our US factory or US distributor.

Orlanth - the case as is allows for likely setups within the rule set, the flexible tray layout and tray options means that you can create a custom case to suit your specific army as suits you.

mrondeau - no worries, there are aluminium cases, Kaiser transport bags and backpacks too, the KR Units description will be improved no problem, and we will be adding Dropzone to the TraySelector and TrayCreator too. The dropzone trays can be found either from the drop down menu (select your army faction from "other"), or use the "what fits" page from the home menu to see them listed out too (select alphabetically)

Thanks for the answers, but I think one of my questions was not clear.
Example: a aluminium case, half-dept. Would PH2+PH5,PH6+PH6, PH30 fit in there ?

What I mean is, as each tray has two halves can we have say a UCM dropship half and a PHR dropship half with two dropships of each.

Do you make trays to order and thus can just cut them or do you only run from stock?

Also can you explain thercontents of tray 30 please. First it was one card decks, now its two plus accessories. What has it got? Dice compartments? Holes for templates?


My reason for all this is because I am thinking of ordering and as trays are included saying no tray 30 please. i would like more flyers etc. Allowing for what I want to buy I will not be buying premium but separate ordering an aluminium 2KRU case with trays equivalent to a large set of UCM and PHR with no trasy 30's and two other trays instead, one full of UCM dropships the other split between PHR dropships and UCM fighters. A PH2+UC4 tray

The PH30 tray evolved during discussion with David. There was the need for a card deck compartment from the start, but in order to accomdate the possibility of exactly what you desribe above the tray can hold 2 card decks (so you can have 2 armies in 1 case), or if you expand the decks there is room, and as one of the card deck compartments is slightly larger all round it covers the option of gamers using ard sleeves or deck boxes. The PH30 tray also has room for tape measue, dice , markes and other accessories too. I will have pics next week,

I will have to wait for the rules to be sure but I personally think a 2KRU case is best spent with no PH30 units and the space remaining used mostly for UCM. Braodly speaking PHR are like Marines and UCM are like Guard, guard being cheaper need more space.

Neat idea, but I would prefer to reserve my allocation of 'soft foam for miniatures' for miniatures. Cards can go in a box, I will need external carriage for the rulebook anyway, dice and cards can go with that.

All in all the PH30 to me means an opportunity to fill out on those things I don't think you have enough of, namely medium dropships. Your allocation contains enough of everything else IMHO.
