Yes it'll mean new models.

Yes it would even possibly look different aesthetically.

But No, chances are you are safe been able to use what you currently own. The only issue if any, are base size changes.

Does new edition mean new models?

Other issues involve your models wargear being either illegal or sub-par under the new rules. For example, if they make is so "Gets Hot" allows no armor save, you might not want all the plasma in your army, even though it's still legal to field. Or the new Codex doesn't have the option for both bikes and storm shields on the same model in command squads. (Both these examples are totally made up to illustrate my point, no basis in rumors/reality)

Occasionally you can have massive shakeups. I played an Undead army in WHFB before they split it into "Tomb Kings" and "Vampire Counts" Luckily the theme of my army was undead bretonians, so I was able to make the switch OK, but I did miss my skull chuckers, carrion, and the odd mummy. Other changes are easier to deal with. My Tyranid war vets serve with the sternguard now, rather then their own unit.

This also doesn't address power levels. My scouts get a lot less use then they did when they were WS/BS 4. Storm shields get a lot more use now that they work against shooting. So even if all your old stuff still works fine, you might want to buy/convert to the new shiny stuff.

Re:Does new edition mean new models?

I have a feeling that this version will almost certainly be backwards compatible with the present codex books and models. Though rule changes sometimes make certain weapons and units behave so differently, that you'll regret gluing them. I've had to snap the arms off quite a few minis over the years to keep them up to date.

One of the nastiest changes was between version 2 and 3. They cut so much out of the game that time, quite a few modes and weapons didn't exist any more. Things like assault marines with power weapons became illegal. And in the case of Squats, the whole army got cut loose. I doubt they'll make such dramatic changes this time though.

Ryan_A wrote:... will these models be redone and make the models I have been worknig on for years obsolete?

Er, no. You can use whatever models you like to play the game as long as they match the description. Me? I'm still using my 20 year old Rogue Trader Imperial Guardsmen and a quick browse round some sites P&M blogs shows I'm not alone in using older GW miniatures.

Also, as I don't game at GW locale's, nothing's stopping me using Mantic Corporation or Sedition Wars Vanguard troopers as guardsmen either

The new starter set may revise a few models for the factions included, but these may be 'simplified' models, so they may not. For example, assuming the set has Space Marines in it, they may keep the current Space Marine models for tactical squads, but the sprues in the starter may be simpler models like the snap-together versiosn they've used in the past. Aesthetically, ocne assembled and painted these should fit in reasonably well with the more complex models.

In time, new Codecies will be released for various factions and some models will be redone. Which models depends heavily on the faction: For example, plastics have more expensive molds, so a longer time to make back the investment. It's not worth turning these models over quickly. Metals/finecast models are more likely to get new models, especially if they're really old or known as 'troublesome' for whatever reason.

However, you can still use old models int he new edition, so this is not a big deal. You may want to upgrade, and may feel the desire to try out new options, but you don't have to. Space Marines are one of the safest as GW seems unwilling to really massively redo them, althoguh they have changed over time. I wasnt into 40k (Battletech player back then) so I passed them over. Now I really like them, and wish I had a few of them.

Automatically Appended Next Post:

poda_t wrote:we are not likely to see models redone. We are likey to see new releases and the "finecast" treatment of decent metal models.

We will only see redone models with codex flips. So, in that regard, given that the core rulebook is flipping, and Eldar were flipped back in 4th edition, I can forsee new eldar models. Possibly new CSM models as well, though I find that unlikely.

PA CSM will likely not be changed, but Termies might see a bit of an update. There is a masterclass (or something like that) bieng done in Sept (IIRC) on how to paint CSM termies. Thats about the time a 6th edition starter set (heavily rumored to include CSM) will hit...and why would they do a big painting deal on one of the older, more basic kits available?

Also its heavily rumored that CSM will be the first 6th ed codex...and that will surely include some new/updated minis.

However like its been mentioned...u can use any generation minis you want, as long as your opponent can clearly tell what they are.

Automatically Appended Next Post:

rigeld2 wrote:Some models are outdated when they get new sculpts - I doubt many people would be okay with TLOS to the old marine sized Avatar, old Warrior sized Carnifexes, or the Hive Tyrants that are that size.

Meh, someone that fussy (outside a tourney) is someone I dont want to play against.
Re:Does new edition mean new models?

"Are the models going to be redone?"

Oh how I wish.
Sometimes they throw in some new bits and bobs to make it seem like theres something new about a kit with a Codex/Edition change.
Example: Tactical Marine box around 4th Edition. A bit of a shuffle of sprues and adding in a new shoulder pad with studs and some new purity scrolls and seals.
However sometimes its an annoying change in some ways.
Example 1: Vampire Counts Skeletons box. Used to come with 20 models. Now a complete re-design which is pretty nice BUT you now only get 10 models.
Example 2: Tyranids 5th edition drops. They separate the Gaunts box which came with Hormagaunts and Termigaunts, 16 altogether and now they separated them into 2 boxes of 10.

tuebor wrote:Even if they do update your core models it doesn't mean the models you have can't be used or anything like that. Tourney people may not like it but theres nothing saying you can't use them.
