Necrons 1000 Points

Whilst reading the Necron codex the other day, I decided to find out just who Trazyn the Infinite is. Suffice to say, he's a very interesting and cool character with some fairly nice rules to boot. Of course, there are more competitive choices but I'm never going to be building WAAC lists, or anything even remotely close. That said, I do like a mix of cool and competitiveness in my lists. This is also designed to be as cost-effective as possible.. all about getting as much bang for my buck as I can. So, without further adieu, the first run of the list:

HQ: 175 pts

Trazyn the Infinite: 175 pts

Elites: 225 pts

Lychguard: 225 pts
- 5 Hyperphase swords and dispersion shields

Troops: 460 pts

10 Necron warriors: 245pts
- Ghost ark Dedicated Transport

10 Necron warriors: 130 pts

5 Immortals: 85 pts
- x5 Gauss blasters

Fast Attack: 135 pts

3 Canoptek Wraiths: 135 pts
- x3 Whip Coils

Heavy Support: 0 pts

~~~~~~~~~
All in all, comes to 995 pts if my mental maths is correct. Was hoping to get in a bare-bones canoptek spider to spawn a half dozen scarabs. Maybe if I ever bumped this up to 1250 I'd include a trio of them.. Ah well, that's another discussion for another day.
So, thoughts/comments/tactics?
Having thought about it, this lists weakness is extreme lack of anti-tank. If I had the points then I'd invest in a royal court to have a few Crypteks spread across the army to solve that. Or, there's the trio of canoptek spiders spawning masses of scarabs idea.. either would work well.
Couple of things spring to mind (apart from AT).
Firstly, there is a lack of mobility in your heavy hitter (I assume Trazyn and the Lychguard are travelling together.) You need a veiltek, because walking Trazyn and the Lychguard probably is going to get you killed (as there isn't a lot else to shoot at).
On the plus side, Trazyn will make the Lychguard scoring, which will be a fairly unpleasant surprise for the opponent.
Not sure why the Immortals are Gauss, you have plenty of warriors. Make them Tesla, so you can move and shoot.
Re tactics, how were you planning on playing this? I'd probably be looking to walk the warriors with the ghost ark behind, Lychguard in front? Wraiths on the side to counter charge?
I'm personally not a fan of blobs of warriors. I would drop the foot warrior squad and add three more wraiths (if you have the models). If not, add scarabs to solve some of your AT issues.
3 wraiths is, I'm told, a bit light to be survivable. see how you go when you play it.
Necrons 1000 Points
Thanks for the advice, I actually redesigned the list over on Heresy Online.
Here's the new list, it was suggested I drop the lord and find some other points to put in an Annihilation Barge - it's a good idea but I'm not fond of losing the Immortals (as that's the only sensible thing to drop).
Dark Messiah wrote:Right you are, scarab squad is necessary to spawn further bases. Makes little sense to me but them be the rules.
Immortals may be a bit out of place but I tried to build a list under the assumption of buying a battleforce in order to save as much money as possible. Besides, if I attach Trazyn then I can make use of their pretty powerful anti-infantry weapons to advance whilst keeping up a torrent of firepower. All in all that forms a pretty damn good Geq killer squad. S5 AP4 with Trazyn's empathic obliterator can cause some pain in combat to big low save/low toughness units. If he dies, well, he can just commandeer the body of a Lychguard and carry on with his lust for collectibles. The fact he's a scoring unit, if put in the Lychguard, creates an excellent go-getter unit.
My only real concern with this list is the distinctive lack of dedicated anti-vehicle firepower, or really the lack of armoured might I can boast in this list at all. I might well drop the wraiths in favour of scarabs/Spider to give me at least one cheap method of veritable anti-vehicle capability. Though to be honest, at 1000 points, it's very unlikely that I'll encounter more than transports and the odd battle tank, which shouldn't be too much of a problem, with Gauss being an unreliable but effective in numbers way of glancing vehicles into uselessness.
Might be better if I totally forego the fast attack/heavy support elements and just take a royal court with a pair of Crypteks with Eldritch Lances to give some anti-tank to the warriors. Points allowing, a Necron Lord with a warscythe wouldn't go amiss in the lychguard unit with S7 2D6 attacks against vehicles. Looking at the RC and taking into account the 140 points I'll have to spare by dropping the Wraiths it's more than enough to have a few crypteks and a necron lord.
Redesigned list:
HQ: 290 pts
Trazyn the Infinite: 175 pts
Royal Court: 115 pts
- 2 Crypteks with Eldritch lances
- 1 Necron Lord with Warscythe
Elites: 225 pts
Lychguard: 225 pts
- 5 Hyperphase swords and dispersion shields
Troops: 460 pts
9 Necron warriors: 245pts
- Ghost ark Dedicated Transport
11 Necron warriors: 130 pts
5 Immortals: 85 pts
- x5 Gauss blasters
Fast Attack: 0 pts
Heavy Support: 0 pts
Necrons 1000 Points
If you are looking to minimise cost, starting with a battle force and a lychguard box is a great way to go. That's what I did.
Not sure if you have seen it but there was a thread on Dakka about what to build out of the box
http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/450105.page
I did something similar, the key is that you can kit bash your crypteks and probably your lord from the leftover deathmark/praetorian heads and backs. It was my first attempt at kit bashing - pics of what I came up with are on my user page.
An Anni barge (or 2!) really make a difference, plus you get an overlord character included in each box.
Re the list, I still think you need mobility for that deathstar. One thing is that I personally don't use squads of warriors bigger than 5, but add lanceteks to the squads. Particularly in a Ghost Ark, 5 warriors with lanceteks (you need 2 overlords to put more than 1 per squad) I find 5 is enough.
Looking at the number of warriors you want may free up the points you are looking for.
Re the Lord, I don't think you should drop the lord, I think you should add an orb to him. So, I'd drop the 11 warriors, add a veiltek, add orb and MSS to the Lord. Then make the Immortals tesla and add scarabs.
Actually, putting your deathstar in a Nightscythe would be cool as well.
Necrons 1000 Points
I've got a list very similar to this, except mine has deathmarks in it as well!
One suggestion - with the spare points, take a veiltek for the Lychguard. That will give you the ability to move them (and I assume the OL) around. Also, when you land, you can then use the abyssal staff to make a mess of squishy stuff.
Word of caution - the OL, Lychguard deathstar is a fun unit to play but a DS mishap on the veil hurts badly.
Automatically Appended Next Post:
PS no Tesla on the immortals?
I'm not so worried about the DS mishap and at the end of the day, if worst comes to worst running about at 1k with T5 2+/4++ is pretty damn reliable against enemy shooting. Not to mention 4+ Reanimation protocols.
As for Gauss over Tesla, probably just personal preference really. Is it really all that good?
I prefer it because you can move and shoot at max range. Also, being able to score more hits than you shot in the first place is cool - every little bit helps.
As you say, personal preference. There was a thread with some mathhammer but I think it depended on unit size and range. Within 12" I think rapid fire is better, but unfortunately on the table that generally means the unit is dead next turn due to CC.
Up to your playstyle really.
