There were aspects of it brought forward from the next book, and aspects pushed back until next season.

Season 3 will be the first half of Book 3.

It's been rumored that if HBO keeps renewing the series, book 5 will be a double season as well in order to fit in those aspects of book 4 where they belong in the overall story.

George R.R. Martin will never stop writing his only cash cow. He's going to stretch it out for as long as he can, and proceed to drive it into the ground until it's completely unreadable after a while.
