Objectives at diffrent Hights...

So me and my buddy were playing a Friendly game and we were both beating the snot out of eachothers armys to capture objectives. One objective in particular became a point of confusion. we rolled and got a temporary answer but we would like an actuall decision from you fellow gamers.

Ok, so an objective is sitting on the second story of a building. Do you:
A. have to be at the same level as the objective to capture or contest it? much like template weapons have to chose a level to shoot at. or,
B. have to be within 3 inches so, from the top of the models head to the base of the objective? (usually up two - three inches) or,
C. Just have to be within the 3 inch bubble of the objective no matter what level it's on, so if your holding the tape measure from the base straight out, and your on the 5th floor but guys are within 3 inches but on the first floor can contest/capture.

Any and all sides or oppinions would be greatly appreciated. :-D

Objectives at diffrent Hights...

Assuming you're actually talking about a Ruin, rather than a Building...

The answer is D: You would have to be within 3" of the objective, as per the objective rules.

For your three options:
A - There is no requirement to be on the same level.
B - You're only given permission to measure from the models' heads in Ruins for determining coherency and close combat engagement, not for checking distance to anything else.
C - Measurement would be from the model's base to the objective. Measurement in 40K relies on the actual distance between the two objects... you don't just measure horizontally.

As Insaniak said. A convention I frequently see is to apply the normal rule that it requires 3" of movement to go up or down a level of a ruin to objectives as well. So if your model's base (or hull, for a vehicle) is directly above or below a ruin on a different level, you are 3" away from it and thus in range to hold or contest.

Objectives at diffrent Hights...

This is something you need to sort out before the game as different areas/groups play it differently. The rules just say you have to be within 3", it doesn't go much further than that so its open to interpretation.

We usually play that objectives have infinite height (i.e it doesn't matter which level you are on, just measure horizontally) and you can't end you move on top of them. This avoids issues with people placing objectives on the top of 4+ level ruins which are next to impossible to reach (unless you deploy up there). The second part stops people parking Land Raiders/Monoliths on top of objectives (without going so far as calling them impassable which would stop you moving through them). You could argue that these are technically house rules but they tend to be the default way of doing things here since it cuts down on 'negative' play.

Powerguy wrote:...so its open to interpretation.

It's really not. The rules tell you how to measure, no interpretation required.

What it is, is open to being house-ruled, because some people prefer to play objectives certain ways regardless of what the rules say.

You could argue that these are technically house rules but they tend to be the default way of doing things here since it cuts down on 'negative' play.

Note really any 'technically' about it, but they're certainly reasonable house rules.
