Need some help on categorising music!

Morning chaps! (well its 9am here in Brisbane regardless!)

I though I'd extend a plea for assistance to Dakka. I'm asking a number of people to have a listen to my band, Immigrant. Were a jam band who are currently in album production for later this year. Everyone I know struggles to categorise what we play!

I'm looking for some feedback on our music from Dakkaites, tell me what you think. What overall genre would you categorise us as? A refreshing change?

Give us a whirl on the following addresses:

www.immigrantmusic.org

www.soundcloud.com/immigrantmusic

www.reverbnation.com/immigrant

Many thanks!

RD/Lee

What blackskullandy said.

But if you want my opinion, well... I'm not exactly great at classifying music myself, but this stuff kinda sounds like some sort of... Smooth Jazz/Funk hybrid? I dunno, I don't really listen to Jazz or Funk.

Howdy. To my ears, it sounds like jazz fusion - in fact, some of it bears more than a passing resemblance to Miles Davis' fusion experiments in the early 70s, particularly In a Silent Way, which I would recommend to any serious music fan.

Sounds good to me, bro. Your sax player is tight.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Oh, and there's nothing wrong with classifying one's music, either.
Cheers for the comments so far.

We try as hard as we can not to 'genrefy' ourselves so to speak, but its tricky as 99% of people will ask you 'what sort of music do you guys play?'

Albatross, thanks heaps for the comments, even though I'm now living in Brissy, I actually hail from Leigh back home, and was a huge fan of artists like Mr Scruff and Fingathing (they're still part of my musical diet now). Manchester truly has some amazing talent!

Cheers for the compliments on the sax, Tom is an incredible player, he's one of those annoying musos who can play note perfect and ad lib something incredible, regardless of how drunk he is... as a percussionist I HATE that, 7 pints and I'm actually missing my cymbals!

I'm not going to get into a pissing contest about this, but I will say the following: Generic conformity isn't an inherent bad, nor is it avoidable. It's a consequence of discourse, something fundamental to popular music.

Automatically Appended Next Post:

RhythmDoctor wrote:
Albatross, thanks heaps for the comments, even though I'm now living in Brissy, I actually hail from Leigh back home, and was a huge fan of artists like Mr Scruff and Fingathing (they're still part of my musical diet now).
Well I'm glad I've erm... generated debate on a 40k forum...

Incidentally Albatross, who's your band? And yep, a gig in Leigh is certainly 'interesting'. I used to play a few of the jam nights around the local areas, Atherton and Wigan. Man, I am SO grateful to be able to play in Australia.

People actually appreciate live music here, and will happily follow you as a band, so no more of that 'invite all your facebook friends to your gig' crap!

Thanks again for the comments, Playing a gig this weekend as a favour to another local muso as her backing band, we've already got her by the short and curlies to do some session work for the album playing flute for a few tracks. We've also got a cellist and violinist looking at coming on board for a couple too. Going to be a somewhat... Cinematic album!
