Open Letter to the Wargaming Community: Starting a Design Again?

Dear Dakka:

I would like to ask for the input of the community, and Dakka's one of those central places with a good cross-section (and is also a place that I've posted at on-and-off for a long time). I've been thinking about restarting the design process for the miniatures game I published some years back, but I'm not sure that it would be particularly well-received at this point.

The reason that I'm sort of curious about its reception is that I have started and stopped a number of times over the last few years, and I don't know if that has eroded any chances of getting the community involvement that I'm hoping for with the development. A lot of "life" things have gone on, and I have not done the best job at gracefully balancing those with my creative pursuits. I really do regret having simply disappeared a few times, and after doing so I'm wondering if people are still willing to give it a go to help with the project.

What I suppose I am asking isn't necessarily specific to me, but a more general question. If a writer has, in the past, been somewhat problematic about staying with a project, would you still be willing to give them support if it seems like their circumstances are better? How much is too much?

I'm asking because I'm in a pretty good place as far as free time and finances go, and I've been getting the design bug again. I've been doing some more brainstorming work on Aetherverse, working on ways to make the 2nd edition an effective upgrade and to make it a more workable system. However, I'll absolutely need the help of other people for playtesting and such, and if my vanishing in the past will prevent me from getting that help I'd like to know it going in to it.

Thanks for your time, everyone.

-Jason

Note: this discussion shouldn't cover the game itself or whether it's even needed anymore. I'll be doing research to find the best place for the game to fit in since there are so many other games out there compared to when I first published it.

What I suppose I am asking isn't necessarily specific to me, but a more general question. If a writer has, in the past, been somewhat problematic about staying with a project, would you still be willing to give them support if it seems like their circumstances are better? How much is too much?

Answering the question in a non-specific way,and not aiming at you at all:

No, it's not worth putting time into. Many people have limited time, lives, jobs, kids, marriages. They still manage to get the things done that they are passionate about. It's very hard to muster the passion or drive to help out on a project if you doubt that the main person behind it isn't as passionate about it as you are.

That said, it's up to each person to make that decision. That was just my opinion. What you need to do is decide if you want to work on the project. If you decide yes, then just get to work, and others will follow. Always someone willing to help, but they'll stop caring when you stop caring.

Your wasting your time, and just going to end up making a name for yourself as a TFG.

On the flip side, YOU are the central figure in your game system. If you don't make it happen, then its not happening, no matter what you do.

Pointing at the games that have been prominant on Dakke from the posters as the designers- such as Cyporean and Necro, being two steller examples off the top of my head on what to do to make the game successful.

Start small, don't pull punches, and don't drink the kool aid. If its got a chance, then you are going to work to make it happen.

and... It won't happen if your not willing to work, be dependable, and be an adult about it.( even if your a kid.)

As the old saying goes- At the end of the day, time is money.

Open Letter to the Wargaming Community: Starting a Design Again?

Well, to be honest there probably isn't too much I can add to what's already been said, because the two previous posts (whilst not necessarilly pulling any punches) are honest and contain some good advice.

All that I will say is that if this is something you are truly passionate about, where your mind is bursting full of ideas and you barely have enough time to write them all down, then just do it.

Yes, there will be those who may have collaborated with you before or have exposure to the 1st edition who will say things like "Oh, it's that guy again who drops out of his own projects" or "What a waste of time - he'll never finish it". But guess what? Who cares what they think. The wargaming community is absolutely mahoosive, spanning continents. And there is a steady stream of kids getting into the hobby as well as "grown ups" getting back into the hobby.

It basically boils down to the following:

1. A great idea
2. Lots of hard grafting
3. Patience
4. A little bit of luck

If you think you have #1, and can dedicate yourself to #2 and #3, then with a little bit of #4 you should be ok.

As the trainer(sneaker)-wearing Greek goddess of victory was fond of saying:

JUST DO IT

If you can commit to it, then do it. Even if there are people who are put off by the past that doesn't stop new people from being interested and hopping on board.

Forget the nay-sayers, because they do not mean a thing. If you're going to do it, don't let the trolls hold you back. All they can do is gnash their teeth in the wind and make some negative noise.

Open Letter to the Wargaming Community: Starting a Design Again?

Thanks for the honest feedback, everyone. That's exactly what I was hoping for when posting here. Dakka's still the best.

Part of the reason that I'm concerned is that while wargaming is sort of full of people that are negative for the sake of being negative, it is also a community that is very much driven by word-of-mouth and reputation. So while I would do well to tune out people that just complain, I do very much want to keep in mind what people might be saying behind the scenes or on websites that I don't visit because that's how word (positive or negative) spreads.

What I think I'm going to do is to take the advice given while keeping in mind the warnings. I'm going to restart my work on the game, and I'm going to keep at it even if there isn't anyone else paying attention to it. People might scoff at it and ignore it because of past failures... and this time I'm going to force myself to keep going instead of getting discouraged and quitting, because it's my own bloody fault that those failures exist.

Hopefully, at some point I'll be able to prove that I'm in it to stay this time, and the support will come back to the point it was when the first edition was released so many years ago.

Thanks, everyone.
-Jason
