Brand spankin' new Ork player, starting slow-grow league

My group finally talked me in to buying in to 40k, and a friend split an on-sale AOBR box with me. This Saturday we're playing a 600 point game, so I need to get familiar with the rules AND figure out how to build up an Ork army at the same time.

So right now, I have:
Ork Warboss
20 boyz (I think these are called Sluggas?)
5 Nobz
3 Deffkoptas

I want to eventually get this to a 1500-2000 point level. I like the idea of delivering a bunch of boyz in trukks, or just a Green Tide army, so I like the idea of lots of boyz. But as I said, I have very little clue what I'm doing and have 6 days to figure it out! I'm not afraid of conversions, so I can probably make stuff like killa kans easily enough to give some heavier support.

Also, I thought I'd buy the Mantic Orx starter box to fill out my army some more. It comes with:
2 x Plastic Resin Marauder Raptors
50 x Plastic Marauder Grunts
10 x Special Melee Weapons
10 x Ranged Heavy Weapons (BFG)
Grenades, Ammo packs, spare heads and pistols

The raptors are basically 3-wheeled dune buggies. I'm not sure what I can build with the 10x Special Melee Weapons and Ranged Heavies, but it'll at least give me options. For $60, does that seem like it'd be a worthwhile investment for what I'm going for? I know I can't play this in a tournament, but my group said they're cool with it as long as I follow WYSIWYG.

Anyway, thanks in advance for any help and advice!

Welcome to the Waagh!
And to answer your question...Yes. If your friend's are fine with models from another line and any gamestores you will play at are ok with mixed company models then do it. There is nothing GW has for the price that can get you that number of usable models. The heavy weapons can be used as lootas (a great shooting platform in the elites slot) or as flash gitz (a love/hate unit in the heavy slot) The raptors should be used as warbuggies with the twinlinked rokkits option. The special melee weapons could just be big choppas for nobz. I was planning to augment my orks with some orx as well.
At 600 points orks have an advantage with numbers. Use the AoBR nobs as nobs with big choppas 4 s7 I4 attacks/model is nothing to snear at, and a little bit scarry if I say so myself. At those low points stick with boyz. Ifyou opponents have any dreadnoughts or equivalent ignore them kill everything else and ignore the walkers if you can.

Thanks so much, Viagrus. Supposedly a GW store is opening in Iowa, so I'll be buying all GW at some point, but for now the group is fine with 3rd party models.

For a "my first game" list, here's what I have so far:
-Warboss: power klaw; shoota; stikkbombz (85)
-5 Nobz: Big Choppa, Slugga (125)
-30 Ork Boyz (180)
-30 Ork Boyz (180)

That leaves 30 points, which I can either use to give a unit stikkbombz, or throw in a 30 point warbuggy with no options. I'm not sure if/when Orks would need stikkbombz when they'd rather chop, so I'm leaning toward the buggy.

Is 'eavy armor and Cybork body something I'd need to convert, or will it stick to wysiwyg if I just say it's there? I know it's up to my group, but they're really pushing for models representing what we bring.

I like the idea of an attack squig, if only because they look oddly adorable. Agh, decisions! But thank you all for your input, I appreciate no one flaming the new guy (yet).

I go all out on my warboss and take cybork eavy armor klaw bosspole and a squig. The only way to convert that would be to basically buy a meganob or ghazzy (Imo) you could take the heads out of the nob bot that have the cybork heads but I just say it has it. I used the AOBR warboss and have never had someone complain. I could MAYBE see them getting upset about the rokkit shoota upgrade but 9/10 no one will say anything (IMHO)
