question about super populated planets.

For instance terra or mars has probably trillions of people. The landscape is littered with buildings, leaving not much room for trees, which reproduces oxygen for us to breath. So what kind of systems have been developed in order for people to breath? I mean its a legitimate question but not sure if anyone really knows. Any speculation?

Not quite correct Hotsauceman1, pilgrims arrive by the millions each year. They are people, IE: religious fanatics, who have sold everything to purchase passage to Terra. Sometimes it takes them entire lifetimes to gather the means to make it. All for the chance to trod the holy soil of terra and see some of the monuments.

Afterwards, they live the rest of their wretched lives in the shadow of Terra.

Of course Terra has "normal" people too.
Re:question about super populated planets.

I don't think that - aside from a few novel authors and their various individual ideas - the writers have bothered to come up with a lot of science behind their setting. However, an awful lot of people seem to wear masks (often called "rebreathers") or have various tubes stuck in their bodies, which might hint towards mechanical augmentation to deal with such environmental conditions.

As to further speculation, I kinda like the idea of large intra-system spaceships ferrying blocks of ice from nearby moons, planets or asteroids, which are then broken down to produce oxygen and hydrogen, or water, depending on what is currently in more demand.

Maybe they even sell this:

As for pilgrims, the 2E SoB Codex contained a star chart with the most prominent/important pilgrim route, leading from Ophelia VII to Terra, passing through the sacred worlds of Chiros and Gathalamor. It may be that you end up in one of the elite regiments of the Planetary Defence Forces and never go off-world.
Or, you join the Guard, the 1121st regiment of the planet. The system is that when they get to the 9999th regiment they start back at the 1st. Thing is, they seem to name a new 1st regiment at the start of every year. You're in an elite unit but your entire planet is regarded as a meat shield for the armies of more politically connected planets so your skills don't count for much. Good luck! You'll need it.
Your best bet is to get a job as a mercenary or security detail for a Rogue Trader or some other rich type, though you'd need to get your timing right in leaving the guard to avoid getting caught by the commissariat.

DarknessEternal wrote:Incidentally, the combined population of Terra and Mars was listed as half a trillion.

Mars is pretty lightly populated. If we assume all of those live on Terra, that gives us a population density of 980 per square km, slightly higher than Bangladesh, and about 2 and a half times that of England (which isn't THAT dense).
So there's probably a fair bit of space around. Obviously public things like squares, plazas, parks etc, but also probably a fair bit of wilderness.

I remember reading a "Col Schafers Last Chancers" Novel about how they had to go across the waste lands and needed re-breathers. Even still, a MOP suit(or a protective sut) and even that dried out there skin, and gave them rashes. But look at the Death Korps of Krieg. They all have re-breathers... Maybe the Steel Legion, and Korps of Kreig are just "special units" who go to worlds that the air is not the breathable. I dont know much about guard.

I would say they are definitely specialized, then again a lot of regiments have their own specializations, such as being stealth, or shock troopers etc. Their not really deployed only to worlds where the air is not breathable, if a campaign is going to happen on a world where the world is not breathable the Departmento Munitorum should supply the participating regiments with re-breathers and other necessary equipment.

question about super populated planets.

Thinking about this for awhile and it's probable that, on top of the O2 scrubbers, recyclers and other techno-apparatus in place that keeps the air in Hives somewhat breathable, you've got a whole lot of room in Hives for things like hydroponic gardens that breed some sort of super-oxygenating plant that, through genetic engineering by the Mechanicus, creates like a thousand times more oxygen that it would normally be expected to through photosynthesis and other planty habits.

With enough gardens like this in place, scattered throughout the Hive, you'd probably not have a great atmosphere, but definitely one capable of supporting human life.
