newbie to fantasy

Hey dudes,

I am a long time hardcore 40k player. As much as i love 40k, i am finding my interest in certain armies dwindling.

I have been thinking of getting into fantasy, and i am looking to know what are the codex rankings. I have got some love for warriors of chaos, tomb kings and vampire counts. How do these armies fare in fantasy, they any good? What are the top codexes about at the moment? Keepung in mind i am a shooty player, so prefer a shooty army.

Thanks!

Re:newbie to fantasy

First off, the various rankings you see are not a true indication of how well the armies perform. The different army books are very close in terms of power. Fantesy is 80% player skill due to the movement phase being radically different to 40k.

So, Topish teir.

Lizardmen, Skaven, Daemons, WoC, Dark Elves

Midish tier.

Ogres, Empire, VCs, TKs, Dwarves, High Elves, O&G, Chaos Dwarves

Bottom Tier. Brettonians, Beastmen, Wood Elves.

Only Wood Elves have a truly bad army book. It's very old and was written for its edition, the changes to how Terrain worked and interacted with movement(and the changes to skirmishers) really hit them hard. But a good General can still win with WEs(you just have to be really good)

Of the 3 army books you listed, only TKs can be shooty. VCs and WoC have almost zero shooting. High Queen Khalida in a horde of Skeleton Archers backed up by Chariots and big monsters is the best you can get.

But the shooting phase is the least impactful of all the phases in Fantesy. Only Dwarves, Chaos Dwarves, and Empire can really win the game in the shooting phase.

Woc and Vampires don't have any shooting to speak of. Tomb kings do.

Tbh the rankings thing is a little artificial and you would be better off looking at armies that interest you in the long term.

Marielle is correct. Fantasy is about who is the better tactician. There are many many many cases where lowest teir armies win championships and are still highly competitive. While you may have to play them to a higher skill level, they are still competitive.

VC and WoC do have shooting, but very very very little. I'd argue that TK isn't that shooty as well. They can be shooty, but I don't find that build to be all that good. I fear monsters + Chariots as core more than archers at core.

I would not put WoC in top tier. Mid teir at best.

Shooty armies: Dwarf and Empire.

Woc has top tier potential but that requires either skill or a ridiculous army list.

its a solid army to start with because warriors ate strong tough and durable so its a little easier to learn the game. which now looks like it will be quite similar to the new 40k.

I disagree cowpow. The rediculous army list is easy to beat. Just avoid the death star. Seems kinda silly but true. The death star is great. However you have to get it into combat with something menacing enough to warrant the point sink, which is easy to avoid. While its definitely not the worst of books, it's definitely not the best.

I will say WoC is an amazing army to learn the game with. Fast. Easy to paint. And one of the cheaper armies to start with. Any new player coming in to fantasy I highly recommend WoC to because it's so straightforward and easy to learn with.

Thanks for all the advice, guys. At least I know if I buy a army they won't be pure, like some in 40k. I'll check out the model ranges on the ones I do like.

Hmm another thing, like it was said the tiers only give a general indication of how they are seen. For example beastmen have a nice book and my friends army has an undefeated record.

TK are nice for shooting, and also fast to paint up, dwarven gunlines, empire gunlines too. However standing and shooting doesn't really win games in my experience.

WoC I would also suggest is more midtier. While the new book is expected ina couple of months, currently theres only a couple of builds which earned them top tier status and they are well known and easily dealt with .

Skaven do have a great mix, and definitely a very, very strong book.
