Going to start Fantasy

So as a whole, my gaming club has decided to start fantasy, Here is my problem.. i have only played maybe 6 games of 8th (when it first came out) have since sold my army and moved on. I have the BRB still though. My question is.. With all the updated armies Which plays which way now? i love the look of the ogres (reminds me of my own family for some reason lol) But no clue how they play. I also like the way the empire looks but again..clueless. Any help out there on how the most recent army updates since 8th edition plays? (i think Vamp counts, ogres and empire and orcs n goblins) Thanks for any help/ info given!!

Going to start Fantasy

I can. I do not know if I will though.

I am teasing.

I love my Vampire Counts. Taking a Lord on the Zombie Dragon is risky because one well placed cannon shot can kill not only your Lord but also his mount. With the new rules about crumble this is not the game ender it used to be, however you will have just lost 700+ points... so be careful.

Terrorgheists can be amazing but are also cannon magnets. They do not do too well in combat due to the undead rule but their scream can devastate.

Your core is generally weak and will not net you victories. However, it can tarpit like no other (except Skaven slaves, because they are cheaper)

Addendum to the core: Ghouls can potentially kill, if you bring them take a unit of 40 for good measure.

Do not take zombies above 20 (because they grow really well) unless you are going to run 50+ for tarpitting.

You can build your lords and heroes several different ways. I prefer a combat vampire but not the ghoul king.

I am practicing a Master Necromancer.

Specials: Grave Guard horde of 30+ will crush as long as you can keep them coming back.

Other people love Crypt Horrors. I have not tried them so no comment.

Cairn Wraith (heroes, not the units) can be a nasty surprise for your opponent if you have a spare 60 points.

Spirit hosts. Use them, at least two. Amazing redirectors and good at tarpiting small units that do not have a static combat resolution. (or magic attacks)

Re:Going to start Fantasy

Lore of the Great Maw is a decent lore. Good buffs, one magic missile(that is really good against elite troops with good armor saves), and one decent panic test spell. The 6th spell is situationally useful, although if stuff goes wrong it can backfire horribly. The best part is the lore Attribute. On a 2+, you heal one wound lost earlier in the battle and gain +1 to cast/dispell your next spell. On a 1 you take a Str6 hit.

The Thundertusk and Stonehorn are ok monsters. The Stonehorn is the better of the two IMO, but many will disagree. Its really up to personal preference. My preference is for the Stonehorn model.
