The Hellheart (Ogres only!)

I've been using Ogres lately. I recently discovered the Hellheart.

It affects all enemy wizards within 5"-30". Since it is common to have only a single wizard, this will generally only effect 1 wizard. You can only use this during the enemies turn. You can use the heart efficiently when the enemy is within 10". When the enemy is within 5" the effect will be guaranteed though likely to hurt you. Assuming the single enemy wizard is more then 5 inches away but only up to 10 inches away this will have a 83%~ of actually working. Assuming it does work it has the below chance of any effect (it will only and must be one.)

17%~ of a strength 10 large blast template to the enemy wizard in range
25%~ of a strength 10 small blast template to the enemy wizard in range
17%~ of a strength 10 hit to all in base contact with the enemy wizard in range
25%~ of a strength 9 hit to all enemy wizards
17%~ of the wizard losing one to three wizard levels and spells

If the large blast goes off then it is accompanied by a 50% chance of the wizard being slain instantly.
This means there is a 8%~ chance of the wizard being instantly slain by this effect.

There is also about a 83%~ chance of the enemy losing D6 power dice.
For each wizard in range you gain 1 dispel dice for this phase. Very good way of "ending" the current magic phase.

An interesting choice over the dispel scroll (though it costs 2x the price)

I can also get Grut's Sickle though it seems kinda bad overall.

What do you ogre players do? Do you use the Hellheart?

Re:The Hellheart (Ogres only!)

Yes, I use the Hellheart. But I also tend to have at least 2 wizards and often 3. Its not like I have to choose between the HH and Dispel scroll.

It useful for the very reason you mentioned earlier, effectivly ending one magic phase of your choice. Usually the one following the turn you have charged the enemy.

This is a good time to use it because, 1) the enemy wizard is close and 2) it is the turn that the enemy will be wanting all their magical buffs to go up.

The only real benifit is the results that drain D6 power dice. Any other benifits should be viewed as a bonus. Don't let it off hopeing the enemy will be killed by Dimensional Cascade.

And I disagree about most armies only having one wizard. Very few will take this course of action, and if it is the case then the Wizard is not an important part of their battle strategy.

Any army that is taking advantage of the magic phase(and at 1500+) is going to have 2-3 wizards. Some armies may have more. O&G and Skaven can often have 3-5 wizards(they are really cheap)

Empire, HEs, DEs, and Chaos will always have at least 2 wizards if they are taking magic seriously. The exception may be an army that is only taking a single lvl2 for dispelling purposes only.

Lizardmen are the only serious magical army that will have 1 wizard. Slann lords dominate the magic phase like no other. Fortunantly the HH can still drain the magic phase for them sufficiently, not to mention any explosions will kill lots of Templeguard due to the Slann's convenient placement in the center of the unit.

All those numbers make me suspect you are thinking about things too much.

And I wonder why you need all those numbers if all you are going to do is as for other people's opinions.

You want to know if an anti-magic hand grenade with a variable range is worth it?

I'd rather have proper application of MR. I'd rather have the Great Helm.

But failing that a suicide butcher running forward is handy if it can shut down the magic phase for the crucial impact hits phase of the game on turn 2 or 3.

Re:The Hellheart (Ogres only!)

Truthfully, for Ogres the game is usually decided by turn 4.

Normally turns 1 and 2 are spent advancing towards the enemy. Turn 3 is the first turn of combat, and it is in your opponent's turn 3 that you want to pop the HH. If this turn's magic is stopped completely, then your opponent will be lacking in his buffation of his army. Combined with your own buffs, this will allow you to demolish the enemy. The rest of the game will be clean up.

I think it's too expensive on casters who are already expensive.

A number of armies can modify miscast rolls or negate them or transfer them as well. HE, DoC, WoC, Lizards, TK come to mind.

A dispel scroll is always gonna work (cept IF). This may not work cuz of range roll or might be shrugged off cuz of abilities/items. Further, you need to move your caster as far forward as possible. Many armies, have their casters fairly far back...cuz, you know, they're wizards. While Ogres are pretty fighty, yours is less fighty cuz he spent a buttload of points on a HH.

Grand Hierophant Khatep wrote:Well, I'd like to make a logical decision and add some advice from some more experienced players to help me decide.

Would you?

Well here's something that mathhammer won't tell you.

Non Ogre players have an irrational hatred for the Hellheart, which is frankly not a particularly good item - sure everyone has a story about the time it worked great. In comped tournaments this will mean getting docked on sports, in friendly games if you let off the hellheart, you will notice that suddenly the game becomes less friendly and you will face the upgraded version of the initiative spells being cast first in every magic phase.

Plus because of the way it is priced it makes builds like the fighty SM with a scrollcaddy either less effective, or impossible. And this build is far more useful.

And if you take the netlist army of mournfangs and ironblasters and impact hit people to death people will be quite happy to say that you played well with a strong army. If you take the hellheart the chances are that you will be TFG.

Re:The Hellheart (Ogres only!)

Yeah, I hate all the kneejerk reactions people have with the HH. Its incredibly expensive for a one use item that will probably just shut down a magic phase.

Of course everyone remembers the time all their wizards got sucked down a hole.

Heck, I had an O&G opponent once who had 3 wizards(low level goblins) and all were in the same unit. 2 were next to each other, one was next to the Warboss.

After two "models that generate power dice take a Str6 hit" and one "models in BtB take a Str6 hit" his characters were all reduced to 1 wound each. Didn't help that when my Sabretusk charged his unit afterwards that his warboss made way to chop me up, and the Sabretusk actually managed to knick his final wound off

Re:The Hellheart (Ogres only!)

Them overestimating the worth of my wizard seems that it should prove beneficial to me. And if I'm docked points in a tournament for using the best of my resources to win, so be it.Overall, my idea of a fun game includes people making the choices to try to win over the choices that give them a worse chance of winning. If I becoming TFG because I used a hellheart then so be it.
