Imperial Fists test paint....

I've probably got too many MEQ armies as it is. But here I am considering another one. The thing is that all of my MEQs are either some traitor legion or a specialist non-coex chapter like Space Wolves or Blood Angels. I need a codex Space Marine army. Plus, with shooting getting something of a boost in 6th edition, I might as well make a "gun line" type force to play around with.

Anyway, I've decided to go with Imperial Fists. I've always liked that chapter since reading about them in the first edition Epic rules fluff. The yellow armour is also apealing. Finally, you just don't see that chapter painted up very much. The biggest reason you DON'T se Imperial Fists very much is that yellow is an awful color to paint. It's a toss up in my mind as to which color, yellow or red is hardest to get to look decent. But I'm up for the challenge.

Here are two test paint figures I whipped out this morning. Now please keep in mind that my painting style is meant to be "quick but decent". I'm never going to win a Golden Daemon. My painting style is designed to quickly put out large numbers of figures meant to look good at a typical viewing distance rather than be show pieces. Note also that I did some crude han painted stand ins for the insigia. I have some decal sheets on the way for the Imperial Fist logo and the squad markings.

and...

(please pardon the clutter of Mrs Trench Raider's computer desk being used as a backdrop)

What I did with these is start out by spraying them with Army Painter yellow primer. I then picked out the details like the bolt gun. I did a quick drybrush on the dark spots, and then did an overall coat of Reaper "flesh wash". One advantage to this is that it's very, very fast. I will probably be able to churn these out at a rate of about 5 an hour if i go with this method.

What say you all? Does my attempt at yellow marines look that bad?

TR

Imperial Fists test paint....

It's hard to see the depth at that range and that backdrop. Quick suggestion, try using a large sheet of white paper or perhaps a white cloth/sheet as the backdrop so that the whole focus is on the mini.

Looking at your 'order of painting', I think I'd suggest doing the wash before the drybrush. This'll help prevent the wash from darkening up the drybrush highlight you just did.

Re:Imperial Fists test paint....

Let me try this again. Sadly, I can;t take a photo to save my life, so sorry about the quality here.

and....

As to the dry brushing, I should have made it more clear. The wash is not applied over areas that have been dry brushed.

TR

Doesn't look bad but is missing some details.

#1 backpack vents should also be boltgun, pick out the skulls. Armor joint at hips, etc.

Other than that the yellow is looking decent.

Imperial Fists test paint....

Thanks for the input.
Like I said, this is a test paint (thus the non-matching figures, I used some extras I had on hand). I was mainly looking to see if I could get the yellow looking halfway human!

TR
