Grey Hunters vs. Blood Claws

Hey all,

Was kinda confused when I saw the stat lineup, wasn't sure why Blood Claws are only WS and BS 3. Anyone care to give their insight on Blood Claws vs. Grey Hunters?

Grey Hunters vs. Blood Claws

Pretty much. Blood Claws are Space Wolf recruits who've had all the genetic augmentation to become Astartes, but haven't completed their training or gained much battlefield experience.

At one point, they were cheaper than Grey Hunters to reflect their inferiority, but for some reason that went away and now they're just bad. If you invest a ton of points in supporting them, they can be good, but still not as good as a squad of Grey Hunters with the same support.

Re:Grey Hunters vs. Blood Claws

They are a pretty good bodyguard for Lukas the Trickster, who's now pretty much the ultimate in challenge material, if a bit expensive.

There is another way the Blood Claws can be very effectively used - as a hammer unit against a small but tough opponent (say Terminators). Get a biggish unit, say 12 or so, load them up in one of the variant Land Raiders, and charge. Take a Wolf Priest if you want to be double sure. All those extra attacks will force lots of saves on the elite enemy, which they'll eventually fail. It's an expensive way to do it, but you still have a decent strength unit and a Land Raider to play with afterwards.

Grey Hunters vs. Blood Claws

Blood Claws can be used effectively, but you have to build your list around them. They have very little Flexibility, they do only three things well, but only with the correct Support and by that I mean a Wolf Priest.
1] They can Assault anything and with the right weapon [Power Fist] beat most things Once or Twice.
2] Hold an Objective. With the 16 model Body Count and a 3+ Save, it will take a lot to push them off.
3] Make for a fun list were you pretend to be Orks in Power Armor.

Grey Hunters do everything well, there are only two reasons not to take them.
1] You are running a Loganwing
2] You are making a Fluffy for fun list.

To sum it up:
Blood Claws are there to have fun.
Grey Hunters are there to Win

Re:Grey Hunters vs. Blood Claws

It's pretty nuts that Blood Claws and Grey Hunters cost the same.

BC advantages:
1 extra attack on the charge
Can take Lukas the Trickster
Can take up to 15 models in the squad

GH advantages
+1WS
+1BS
Have a Bolter
Can shoot if they are able to charge
Access to Mark of the Wulfen and (especially) Wolf Standard
Can take a second special weapon with only 10 men in the squad, not 15

Note that Grey Hunters will average 2 hits per model on the charge against WS3, the same as the Blood Claws. Against WS4+, they average 1.5 against 2. For a 10 man squad charging, that's 5 fewer hits which is not enough to kill a MEQ on average.

In conclusion, the only logical reason I can think of to explain why both models cost 15 points each is that the GW copy editor was huffing paint. I don't normally like to bash GW over stuff like this, but it's pretty silly that these two models have the same cost.
