Weapons Platforms

The idea is to introduce weapons platforms that are available to all races, similar to fortifications. The rules are as follows.

Weapons Platforms: Most of the races in the galaxy have developed some form of weapons platform for use by their infantry. These platforms are designed to provide a semi-permanent fire base for weapons that are too heavy to widely equip infantry with. Many races also have ways of inserting these platforms into contested territory, either so that they can be set up in areas that it would be difficult to carry the weapon, or so that some sort of automated guidance can fire the weapon behind enemy lines, buying time for advancing troops.

Any army can take 0-3 Weapons Platforms per force organization chart used. Note that platforms which are upgrades for certain units, such as Eldar Guardians, do not count towards this total, and behave differently (as described in the appropriate codex).

Weapons Platforms can be deployed one of two ways. The first is that they may be deployed anywhere on their controlling players half of the table after terrain has been placed but before units have been deployed. The second is that they may be kept in reserve to enter the battlefield later via deep striking.

All weapons platforms count as T6 W2 models that have no armour save. They able to rotate (without counting it as movement), but are otherwise immobile.

During your shooting phase, any friendly non-vehicle model (ie, models you control from your codex, and any battle brother codexes) may fire the weapons on the weapons platform instead of firing their own weapon. This includes models that are somehow able to fire multiple weapons a turn (such as a Tau model with a multi-tracker). They fire at their own Ballistic Skill, and are subject to any special rules they would normally be effected by when shooting. However, the model firing the weapon always counts as being stationary when firing it, even if they just moved into position with the weapon.

Alternatively, if the gun is not manned, it can be fired by the automated targeting system included in the weapons platform. This could be an Imperial Machine Spirit, a daemonic possession, a Tau targeting AI, or a Tyranid Intelligence. The gun may fire at the closest enemy target, however, it counts as firing at BS1.

When a weapons platform is charged, it counts as having a WS of 0. However, as long as there is a friendly infantry model in base contact with the Weapons Platform, it can not be charged and it can not be allocated hits, as the enemy is too focused on their opponents to have time to deal with a stationary gun. Additionally, models attached to the weapons platform can fire it during overwatch at their normal ballistic skill, as many of these emplacements were designed to be used even as an enemy barrels into you.

Weapons Platforms can not contest objectives. Additionally, weapons platforms neither count towards the maximum number of units you can hold in reserve, nor towards the minimum number you can must deploy at the start of the game.

Types of Weapons Platforms:

Note that although most of the weapons platforms listed refer to the Imperial versions, assume that all other races have access to platforms which, while they may appear and be armed differently, function the same for the purpose of the game.

Heavy Gun Platform - 25 pts. Range 30" S5 AP5 Heavy 4
Anti-Infantry Platform - 25 pts. Range 36" S4 AP- Heavy 2, Small Blast
Anti-Armour Platform - 25 pts Range 36" S7 AP3 Heavy 2
Flamer Platform - 20 pts Range Template S5 AP4 Double Template
Melta Platform - 35 pts Range 12" S8 AP1 Heavy 2 Melta
Destroyer Platform - 45 Pts Range 48" S9 AP1 Heavy 1, Twin Linked
Air Superiority Platform - 35 Pts Range 48" S5 AP- Heavy 2, Skyfire, Interceptor, Advanced Anti-Air Targeting
Suppression Platform - 30 Pts Range 24" S 3 AP- Heavy 5, Pinning

Double Template: Any models covered or partially covered by this weapons template generate 2 hits on the unit instead of 1. Additionally, when charged, the model gets 2D3 Wall of Fire attacks instead of D3
Advanced Anti-Air Targeting: This weapon has highly advanced targeting algorithms meant to help it hit flying targets. When this model or a model manning it fires at a flying model or a skimmer, add 1 to the ballistic skill of that model(to a maximum of 10). However this gun is unable to target non-flying, non-skimmer models at all.

So basically I have 3 concerns about this. The first is whether or not this seems like a fun and useful idea for the game that is distinct enough from fortifications. The second is whether or not this idea is externally balanced. Could it be correctly balanced by having the weapons platforms properly costed (ie, costed so that people who want to use them competitively can, but so that using them isn't necessary to perform in a competitive environement), or is the idea as a whole too unbalancing. The third is whether or not all of the guns are properly balanced internally. I wanted to have a large selection of weapons available that all served a different purpose, but I realize that as you add more options, it becomes harder to balance each option among themselves, and I don't want one platform to be "always correct" to take (ignoring the fact that this would be one of the only ways for many armies to get skyfire/interceptor, I'm just assuming that over time the lack of answers to fliers will balance itself out).

EDIT: Corrected typos, filled in missing information and minor balance adjustments.

Do you have a approx. points cost for these? As it stands, the 'Heavy Gun Platform' is the best and would need to cost a decent bit. Although the 'Anti-Armor' one is good too.

These are very rough points approximations, and some of them will likely be adjusted upwards in terms of costs (and some corrections made, I accidentally made the Heavy gun S6 instead of 5, and I forgot to make the melta platorm heavy 2), but agree that these are very roughly costed. I also wanted to not just make them generic enough that it seems like every army would include some variation of it (as the fortifications in 6th seem very imperial oriented). Because of that, I tried to avoid just making them the "Heavy Bolter Platform" or the "Lascannon Platform". But yeah, everything is cost and power adjustable until it reaches a balanced point.
