Lords of Midas: Imperial Guard

Started this army about a two years ago, and have a good 5-6000 points modelled and ready to paint. I figure I have enough done to showcase some, and keep myself motivated to post updates regularly.

When I was settling on a paint-scheme, I tried a few more conventional real world camo patterns, and some bizarre night-vision inspired ones. Eventually I decided I'd just fully embrace the absurdity that is 40k, and plate my guardsmen entirely in gold. They will die in droves, but dammit, they'll look fancy doing it!

I'm not one for writing 50 pages of fluff back-story, but here's the brief idea behind the troops.

Lords of Midas
The mining world of Midas is extraordinarily rich in gold and other valuable minerals, making it one if the wealthiest imperial planets in it's segmentum. The majority of mining is performed by massive servitor rigs, or criminal chain-gangs, leaving the majority of civilians living a life of luxury. Indeed, many normal citizens are as rich or richer than nobles from other worlds. Serving in the Imperial Guard is seen as a great honour, and it is common for Midas youths to spend their leisure time training and competing for recruit positions. Midas equipment is extremely high quality and is painstakingly crafted at family operated artisan-workshops throughout the planet. Regiments are known for their exorbitantly expensive hardware, and well trained, disciplined soldiery.

First up, is said soldiery. A finished platoon of 40 guardsmen and officers (also showing the difference between some older and newer painted models). Heads are from Pig Iron.

My Straken command squad (unfortunately, hasn't seen much use in 6th).

Lascannon team, using a sentinel lascannon.

Sentinel with autocannon.
All my vehicles use a house-crest shield for identification.

Chimera

LR Exterminator (turret is from baneblade kit)

Hydras (may be becoming Aegis Quad guns and Griffons :c)

Ogryns. (Heads and backpacks are Kreig Orks from Kromlech)

And with the new ally rules in 6th edition, I started making up some counts-as Sisters of Battle to use as Power Armoured heavy infantry. Midas regiments get all the fanciest gear, so there's nothing stopping them from fielding power armour clad troopers. I chose SoB because they have human statlines. These aren't space marines afterall, just rich guys in nice armour.

Here are some Retributors and my first test paint sergeant. Heads are pig iron, backpacks are Robogear, and shoulderpads are Vampire Counts Grave Guards. Heavy Bolters are modeled as lighter Bren gun style LMGs.

And finally, here's a power armoured commander of some flavour, made from Coteaz. Not sure what I'm going to use him as yet. Canonesses are pretty junky, but if I ever feel like using space marines as allies...

Let me know what you think!
Stay tuned for updates!

Great concept! Something fresh and original

I like the scheme; the groupshot is really striking with all of that gold! I like the personal heraldry on the vehicles and Straken's drum mag shotty is pretty freaking awesome!

There are a few things that clash, IMHO. Your main body of troops have this "long and celebrated tradition of war" feel to them with the old fashioned Pig Iron helmets and heraldry on vehicles, which doesn't really go with the super high tech look of your retributors. The ogryns (while fun conversions) have the opposite problem, being to ramshackle to fit in with the "best gear in the 'verse" theme.

Keep up the great work, def subbed!
Rawson

Lords of Midas: Imperial Guard

This army is full of win.
The blue on the officers is a really nice offset to the gold and you should try to factor that in a little on your rank and file troops
