Army Painter Products - Primer Sprays?

Hi guys - I need some advice please.

I have only ever used GW products for all my painting. Now I am considering using some of the coloured primer sprays from army painter. I just wanted to check a few things.

* They are acrylic based, is this the same as GW basecoat sprays?
* Do regulr GW paints go on top of an army painter spray basecoat ok?
* Any positive or negative reviews of the army painter sprays? Planning on using the metal one to quickly paint my ork tanks, and the dark green one for my eldar

Thanks guys

They are fine. I have three of them - the metal one, which actually looks close to former Citadel Chainmail, Dragon Red and plain black. With them I am not using any primers at all - the basecoat serves as a primer, You just have to pick the color accordingly. For example, for my small High Elves project, since many of models are wearing armor, I am spraying them with metal and then doing the rest.
After dipping they look like this - remember, there was no separate basecoat and just some minor highlighting.

And btw, all hobby stuff made by GW is heavily overpriced

I have used the AP primers for a few years now and like them. I love the fact that they have color matched paints to go with them!

Lets take my GK for example I used the chainmail primer (saved me hours and hours of painting silver, I had the color match paint right there for when i colored outside the lines.

The only color primer I've had any issue with is the grey in that it tends to come out really thick, lesson learned i use shorter sprays from a bit farther away from the models on that one.

I find that they all dry fairly quickly (about the same as the GW stuff) I still let them sit overnight after priming though (old habits and such).

edit for afterthought:

I have been getting about twice as many models primed from one can compared to the GW product (but this may be due to the fact that I have more experience now priming than i did back then).

* They are acrylic based, is this the same as GW basecoat sprays?
- its acrylic based, but its a bit different then citadel spays. it contains a quick drying resin which requires you to spray much closer to the model. so short sprays are advised to avoid pooling.
* Do regulr GW paints go on top of an army painter spray basecoat ok?
- yep, but the surface tension is a bit different so if your using washes or glazing over them might not work as good.
* Any positive or negative reviews of the army painter sprays?
- positive! before i had my airbrush i used them to prime and basecoat my models including a rhino you can find in my blood raven blog

Army Painter Products - Primer Sprays?

Thanks all

Well I was planning on just using a GW Devlan mud over the top of an AP metal primer. My other tanks were basically bolt gun metal and then Devlan over the top.

Do you think that The AP metal primer with Devlan over the top won't work the same (or look the same more importantly)?

I also have a GW airbrush but have never got round to using it, maybe I should think about loading that up with Boltgun metal and doing it that way

Well, try doing a small test mini with chainmail and see if devlun mud will dull it down. AP spray is not exactly chainmail silver, it is a tiny bit darker, but still it is closer to chainmail than boltgun metal.
