The DE are unseleighe Sidhe, with some hinky Pazuzu-goes-to-town vibe and a dash of Frankenstein/Cronos thrown in.

The eldar are heavily based on celtic myth (the Seleighe sidhe side- the nicer ones) including the craftworlds being named after old celtic holidays and the aesthetics. Mkes sense that the darker cousins would be too.

Being based off of elves, that's not surprising. Plus, the not-so-secret Tolkien origin of the name "eldar."

Tolkien jacked most of his ideas from norse myth, including names, places, languages...

Not surprising given that he was an expert on Ancient Norse IIRC

I think she's my favorite female character in the mythos.

I enjoy the Dark Eldar codex as a whole. It's a really good codex as far as the fluff.

Sindarin being a language Tolkien created for his elves.

The word Eldar is far older If i recall correctly it's literal meaning is 'fire warrior' or something similar in Old Norse.

He was the first person to have Elves be tall fair folk, IIRC. Prior to him, elves in various mythologies were more like leprechauns then 'perfect' humans. Santa's elves pretty much.

The modern Fantesy concept of Elves is almost exclusivly due to Tolkien.

Interesting enough, the Eddas also mentions dark elves.

Current depictions of the Dark Elves, however, borrow heavily from the Alps of german folklore which, as Grey Templar said, look less like the blond, tall elves of celtic/norse myth and more like lascivious goblins or twisted leprechauns.
