Necrons

It says in the fluff that Necron Warriors will only move and stuff if there is the presence of a commanding presence otherwise they will just shoot at the closest enemy. I've written three additional special rules for the Necrons. Not all three should be implemented, only one.

1: "At the start of each turn, check to see if the unit is within 24" of a Lord, Overlord, Lychguard, Triarch Praetorian, Cryptek or special character. If the unit is within the range then move, shoot and assault with the unit normally. However, if the unit is not within the range then the unit may only shoot at the closest enemy."
2: "To move, shoot and assault, a Necron Warrior must pass a leadership test. If the test is failed then the unit may only shoot at the closest enemy."
3: "At the start of each turn, check to see if the unit is within 24" of a Lord, Overlord, Lychguard, Triarch Praetorian, Cryptek or special character. If the unit is within the range then move, shoot and assault with the unit normally. However, if the unit is not within the range then the unit must pass a leadership test. If it fails the leadership test the unit may only shoot at the closest enemy."

The points value of the unit should then be pushed down to maybe 12.

You might want to make it clear that you only propose that one of these three rules be put into effect. It wasn't immediately clear, and I was rather confused for a second.

As for the rules, I prefer rule 3 and I think it's not such a bad idea, though I've never played Necrons. Perhaps you could go with a Wraithsight kind of thing, where any unit out of range cannot operate on a D6 roll of a 1?

How would these rules effect other units, such as Destroyers, Wraiths, Lychguard and Vehicles?

@The Shadow
Fluffily the Lychguard, Wraiths, Destroyers and vehicles have some sort of mind. It was the Necron Warriors who got the short end of the straw and are therefore mindless goons. The rule should only affect the Warriors. It also states that without a commanding presence the Warriors will switch to guard mode, so they'd still shoot but only at oncoming targets. Fixed the thingie as well.

@Lightcavalier I'm not sure what lurking Tyranids do/not do.

Re:Necrons

While I certainly appreciate someone seeing digging into the fluff, I wonder why you think that Necron Warriors should be nerfed in such a way.

Forcing LD tests, to me, is more of an annoying issue with LD 10. You are most likely to pass them anyway and it just wastes time rolling the dice for little reason which goes along with measuring distance plus it's something you have to keep track of / remember. It might slow the game down.

You suggested to reduce the point cost to 12. It's good to see that you thought about compensating the nerf to some degree. 1 point, however, is insignificant. Effectively, a point reduction of 1 point would result in 1.5 -> 1 warrior "more" at 12 points / model in an entire unit of 20 Necron Warriors. In order to compensate for the suggested new rule, you'd have to drop the cost to about 8-9 points which would then be too cheap for what a Necron Warrior can do.

So in the end, it's nice that you enjoy the fluff but at the same time, I don't see a reason to prolong the game / nerf Necron Warriors.

Feel free to convince me from the opposite though

An interesting concept, but I think fluff wise, Necron wireless command communication is most definately strong enough for a single Lord to control every Warrior on the same battlefield as him, problably a lot further than that actually. What if you tweaked your idea to have a sort of Tau Ethereal type event when the Overlord/Destroyer Lord dies.
Ex. All above listed units take an LD test upon the Warlord's death. If they fail they revert to automatic programming. As such they must always move towards the nearest objective (if no objective, enemy table edge), and shoot at the closest enemy unit.

Point cost remains the same.
