How do you paint treads? (EDIT)

So I started my first battle wagon two days ago and I've been stuck with this obstacle. I have no idea how to paint it's threads.

I know how to make it look dirty after the base coat have been applied, but I have no idea what base color to put on it.

Should I go for gunmetal Grey only? Or should I mix some tinBitz/dwarf bronze to make some parts look more copper like? Do I just leave them primed (black)?

Thank you

How do you paint threads?

Oh, you mean treads! I was wondering which threads you were talking about when you mentioned a Battlewagon...

Honestly, I can't give you my opinion without seeing the thing, first. Throwing a few brass/bronze plates in for the sake of variety might be a nice touch, but sometimes it does more harm than good (too many colors can cause visual "clutter" and break continuity, making it more difficult to distinguish the various forms). Straight gunmetal is a safe bet, and not an unattractive one. I'd keep it simple, first, then go over a few plates with Tin Bitz if you think it's lacking. Knowing that your future weathering will help tie everything together, to a degree, you can afford a bit of experimentation.

Usually, prime the treads black, basecoat in boltgun (or whatever the equivalent is these days), then wash with Badab Black. Privateer Press or Villajo(sp?) may have equivelants. The new GW shades don't work as well for this.

Re:How do you paint threads?

I did a basecoat of black, then covered them in Tin Bitz. Afterwards a thinned down coat of chainmail. Then I used devlan mud and added a selfmade kind of sandypaste made from bestial brown and some modelling sand (on the wheels it's one of the new texture colors by GW). Another heavy wash with devlan mud and finally some drybrushing with underhive ash. A watered down troll slayer orange was used to indicate some rusty spots here and there. As it is a layer paint, it blends nicely over the bestial brown.
Maybe you can leave out the tin bitz coat, as it doesn't really shine through... At some point i also tried out some heavily watered down snakebite leather or vermin fur, but that didn't work out well and seems to eb covered by all the devlan mud layers!

the treads on my rhino were done by a friend of mine: black undercoat, then steel legion drab, a drybrush of underhive ash and finally a drybrush with boltgun metal (sorry for the lousy picture. I hope you get the idea). He used an airbrush for this model btw., but I think you might get a good result with a brush, too, as it's not a flat area!

With steel legion drab you get a dry dust-like effect, with other brown tones you get a more muddy appearance.
