Wargaming models for RPGs?

The very last DnD game I ran almost ten years ago, I used WFB models for battles. I thought they had a great collection of models that fit a wide range of enemies and some good specialty models for BBGs. The Orcs and Beastmen subbed for almost ten different kinds of enemies alone (each!) and the rattlings and brettonians filled most others. After reading the newest thread of price complaints I was wondering if anyone else used these or other wargaming models to rep RPG skirmishes? The level of detail was perfect and the ability to churn out a really good looking battle sequence for fairly cheap always made my players happy they invested the time. I thought they really gave my games that extra kick and pulled players into the tactical side of battle. It's almost giving me the itch again, but too much going on right now for that kind of crack!

I've bought the occasional box of WHFB models when I need a large number of RPG enemies, though it's rare that I actually need 10+ of any given monster. I'll generally stick with Reaper for anything human- or elf-based (as I've got dozens of those already) but if I ever run a campaign with significant numbers of hostile orcs, you bet I'll grab a box of WHFB (or LOTR) figs for that.

GW models have been going up in price and options for a while now. Great for modeling, not so much for hoards of D&D monsters.

Reaper's new resin 'Bones' line is deliberately meant to let DMs flesh out their dungeons.

Wargames factory has historicals, Orcs and skeletons, Mantic has a whole line of fantasy and both Warlord Games and the Perry's make medieval historicals for your human hoards.

So those are my recommendations.

Works well enough when I don't have the minis.

That's something to remember: there's no particular reason that you HAVE to use minis with D&D of any version. Even though WOTC has pushed it more towards a minis-centric ruleset (largely to, you know, start pushing plastic) it still works just fine if you have abstract markers.

Wargaming models for RPGs?

Really, the price beats the Dungeons and Dragons miniatures, for instance if you want a group of ten orcs you can kit them out however you want, and magnetize them for both bows, dual wield, or whatever you find works. However as Kyoto has already pointed out there are still cheaper companies e.g. Mantic.
